His exact words are “WHETHER YOU WANT TO LOSE FAT, gain muscle, or do both, strength training should be the core of your conditioning. Aerobic activity, on the other hand, is inefficient and ineffective no matter your goal.” And he goes to assert that aerobic exercise will only lead to overuse injuries which will shorten your life. To be fair he does accept that doing some running is a good idea if you’re training for a running event. I do get the impression he’s pitching hard to folk who want to be thin and pretty, and I was having trouble taking that chapter seriously because that’s not quite what I’m trying to get from it. He does make a good point about things like running tending to burn away muscle mass that you’re not using, and that is part of what I’m reading it for, but I felt he could be making a better pitch to the likes of us. |

I’ve got quite interested in CrossFitthis year and a lot of that is about using strength training as cardio, but they also use rowers, running swimming and anything else they can to work all the body in a variety of ways ( max single lifts, high rep sets, long and short cardio pieces etc. To me dismissing cardio the way the title of that chapter does is just daft, but I’m saying that without a successful career as a personal trainer and bestselling author so what do I know? |

Maybe he means “chronic cardio” or “junk miles” as I’ve heard it referred to on other running sites? Perhaps doing speed intervals or “running like a boxer” or other running sessions with a specific athletic purpose is OK? PS I do a lot of the boxers running. Really, really slow. But not intentionally🙁.

Maybe, N-R. I have to say I stopped reading(not permanently. I'll pick it up again tonight) when I read that chapter title so he might redeem himself with the detail of what he really means.

Got to that point too, Nellers. I’m not saying that he is wrong, but it’s a pointless argument for those of us who want to compete at races, because losing weight and specificity are the exact outcomes that we are training for. That said, it’s been a few years since I have actually seriously competed as I seem to have lost the will to hurt as much as it takes, so I have been thinking that strength training is something I should look at - strength and flexibility are so important as we get older as they are absolutely key to independence and health. So I am in; just wish I hadn’t gotten to the end of the Kindle sample without seeing a single exercise! |

There are 81 pages of exercises in the book, with 125 exercises included. They are described clearly, with ideas to make most of them easier and more challenging.

First impressions after an extremely brief skim read, so my opinion may change. Positives: The exercise library appears comprehensive. It’s a cheap book, it’s not a waste of money It’s an ok intro to calisthenics. I think you’ll get some decent training, though I’ve not looked at the programs yet. Negatives. Full of hyperbole, generalisations, contradictions and omissions There’s nothing new in there. As an intro book it’s good enough & for £1.99 on kindle it’s not money wasted, just don’t expect too much from it & for it to be an all encompassing training bible. For me, there are better body weight trainers & books out there. I suspect there are better programs too, but as I haven’t looked at Mark Lauren’s programs yet I can’t say. |
