thanks all for the advice. and yes, i generally don't take too much notice of the weight of things precisely because I'm not built like Froome! :-)

But if you've got decent wheels it's sort of counter-intuitive to knowingly add extra weight ... :-)

Bought the comic this morning, shan't be doing it that much longer but that's another tale.
Article inside about someone setting a new record for the number of Fred Whittons. Not sure if the record was taken from the buzzy one or if he had "lost" it to another but the article showed a pic of the new holder. He was wearing Honister clothing and was from that club and claimed not to know there was a record. IIRC the buzzy one and the 'Raptor were in that club; so let's be kind and just assert something has been lost in translation...

a question please, dear biking fetchies

i'm replacing the chain on my bike - a straight swap of a Shimano HG54. i've shortened the chain to the correct number of links but i'm confused about how i pin it all back together. Do i use the pin that i took out of the chain to shorten it? looking at online help videos they all seem to mention having to use a special pin to connect Shimano chains, but one didn't come with the chain i bought.

any thoughts please?

Usually with Shimano chains there is an extended pin with a conical face that you push through with the chain tool, and then break the end off. I'm not sure why it wouldn't be included with the chain.

You may struggle to get the old pin back in, and I think it would be a weak point if you did. If there isn't one you may find it easier to find a spare link than a spare pin. Spare links can be useful anyway in case you break your chain on the road.

I use a quick release link, makes it a lot easier to take the chain off for cleaning.

Dai - it depends on your definition of "record"

He rode *a* route 12 times in 12 days which followed the Fred Route, but starting and finishing in Ennerdale rather than at the actual start.

This does make a difference because it puts the hardest climbs at the start and completely changes the nature of the course.

When I rode the 10 Freds, I specified that it was the Fred Whitton 4 Seasons route which had a timing card (so start to finish time was total time and not "riding" time)

He also claimed his 'times' as "moving" time which I didn't

In a way they are not comparable, but the main reason he was doing it was to raise money for a local charity - so a laudable effort.

The only person who will be interested in having the "record" held by the Club, is the same person who is the reason that neither V'rap or I renewed our membership of the Club.

Might choose to piss him off by doing a 13 in 13 on the tandem when we retire - just 'cos ;)

[I thought the reason we didn't renew our membership of the club was because Fellmouse was ill and we couldn't leave her. But it would be true to say that we didn't entirely fit the demographic :P ]

I was thinking, "What have you volunteered me for now, Buzzy?" but it's OK. He's elbowed me off the tandem in favour of doing a Ten Fred Whittons In Five Days with a better stoker.
