I tried slime filled tubes on my commuter. I couldn't tell whether it stopped punctures (they're erratically distributed things) but I did notice every time I opened the valve to pump the tyres up I'd get a spray of goo firing back from within. Over time this appeared to make the valve more sticky to undo, and trying to get the valve open without the core coming out was tricky.

So the garmin virb (free) software lets you overlay GPS data (from fit or gpx files) into your video. This is quite useful should you have an accident. I paid £75 for the original garmin virb and the video above was recorded in 720p at 60fps which seems better than recording at 1080p/30fps. My commute is an hour and battery life is more than enough for out & back without charging. Nothing remarkable in my video thankfully apart from 2 other cyclists whizzing past me. |

I spent last week in the Lake District and managed to get out for just one ride, taking in the Whinlatter Pass during a 30-odd mile ride. I wasn't struggling, but certainly felt it which only puts me in awe of all those who do the Fred Whitton or the Lakeland Loop. Admittedly I live in an area that makes Holland look mountainous, but if it felt that that after 6 miles what must it feel like after 60-odd miles and with Kirkstone, Honister and Newlands in your legs, and with Hardknott and Wrynose still to come. Respect to anyone who has done it |

Lakeland Loop and the Fred are fantastic rides. But it does help when they are your local rides!! |

Provided you're not going to be doing races in which disc brakes are banned that looks very appealing, Gymfreak R4R, it's all a matter of expectations. I'm a rubbish cyclist, and I finished the Fred in a reasonable time and without getting wrecked by it because I knew enough about the route and about my own cycling to manage it well. Whinlatter's the first climb in the "pleasantly undulating" third quarter that includes Fangs Brow and Cold Fell, and I looked forward to it. |
