It's been a good conversation opener for me and child. They watched episode one on train. We are now away for the weekend. I'm in the pub alone and they are having a nap. We both understand that that is ok and what we each want to do. I've been to the supermarket and they have not had to come with me or been asked to make choices of what to have for dinner. They love the place we are staying in and immediately having a nap doesn't mean they don't .Flatlander we will be watching the sunset on the north Norfolk coast and we will both enjoy that.

DocM A programme like that approached well can provide opportunities for discussion.

Having been on the Sheringham seaside with your family, I can understand that enjoyment. :-)

This BBC Radio 4 programme attracted my attention: the 'Hayley' in the title, 'My Name Is Hayley' is pressing for her autistic son to learn in a specialist school. She elects to embark on the appeals process and talks to IPSEA, the Independent Provider of Special Education Advice. The headteacher and SENCO of a large Rotherham comprehensive speak of their frustration in not being able to fulfil every needs of students with difficulties in learning in mainstream.

I watched it. It was interesting. I was never a big masker because it seems dishonest to try to be something your not.

I don't know how it is for other people but in my experience masking is hardly a conscious decision! Nothing to do with honesty or dishonesty. It just fucking happens.

AND...

It is exhausting. And upsetting. And masking for a long time leads to spectacular meltdowns.
So yeah, really fun to be called "dishonest" for doing it as well. Thanks.

I think that Jelly feeling dishonest if she masked is not the same thing as calling other people dishonest for masking.

Another masker here who is not in the slightest bit offended by Jelly’s comment.

I didn't read your comment as condemning others who mask, either, Jelly.

I'm not always conscious of masking, as someone diagnosed as an adult I'm also not sure what parts of my 'personality' are masking and trauma response rather than 'the real me' (if such a thing exists), though there are definitely signs when I've been doing it for too long that I'm learning to recognise now.

Other times I'm very aware that I'm doing it, and of the effort it's taking, and I don't feel dishonest in doing so because it's not purely for my own benefit, but I can see how it might make others feel that way about themselves.

Surely the whole point of having a support thread and campaigning for neuro inclusivity is accepting that all of our personal experiences are valid and we shouldn't try to force people to think or feel exactly the same way as we do?

Does anyone know what's involved in the diagnosis process for autism? Is there a test, how does it ...
