Does anyone know what's involved in the diagnosis process for autism? Is there a test, how does it work, and how objective/final is it?

Depends on the age of the person and, in most places, on the available professionals.
In a child, the diagnostic process, although designed to assess whether or not the child's features/behaviour meet the defined diagnostic criteria, isn't particularly structured. It involves interviewing parents and sometimes other carers or professionals involved with them, talking to the child and getting them to perform age-appropriate tasks, and the production of a detailed report setting out the situation and advising on specific things that might be helpful.

I know I should be fine with this. But I'm not.

In an adult, it's better than it used to be but it's still difficult for an adult who has autism but is functioning well OR who has autism in combination with other severe learning disabilities or physical disabilities to get a definite diagnosis.

It's not for me. It's for my little boy. Which is a bit hard to take, to be honest.
