Who came up with the suggestion, and why? Sorry. I'm being all the questions, but I'm a nosy cow and I know a bit of stuff about autism. |

School did. But I don't know whether the XH sowed it as a seed.

Like all Neurological stuff its a bit subjective. There's an Autistic Quotient test which is supposed to give a guide as to where an individual sits on the Autistic Spectrum, but unless he was to score spectacularly high it doesn't necessarily mean much (My wife scores 48 out of 50 and is as Autistic as a bicycle). Having ticks or funny habits or being a bit OCD about which way round he keeps his toy cars or whatever isn't, in my amateur view, an indication of Autism. Neither is having a meltdown in Tesco's when he cant have an ice cream. Sometimes I wonder if schools tend to label kids who are different as a sort of "Get out of gaol free" card for poor teaching/discipline. *puts on tin hat and waits to be flamed by the teachers on here" |

I'm led to believe that a label attracts funding that could go towards extra classroom support.

Not sure whether that's a hand grenade, a bunch of flowers or one disguised as the other. Fair point though.

There is very little extra money available in schools for child with Autistic Spectrum Disorders because so many children fit somewhere on the spectrum. Some children will get a legally binding Statement of Educational Need; most won't. Even if they do, very little money accompanies it. All children are different and have different needs and nearly all teachers just get on with the job of working with the individuals in their class to do the best they can. Some teachers/schools are not like this...

Oh, and like Vrap said, what leads you to suspect that your child may be on the Autistic Spectrum somewhere?
