I think there is a sub-40 in me but not the 39:?? I need for 70%. I don't think I'll be doing a 10K again any time soon. They are quite unpleasant. |

71.5% now with a 5K in 19:26 This is after 18 days of barely any running due to consecutive niggles. So how did I PB when I should have lost fitness? I bought some carbon plate shoes from Nike - the zoom fly 3. I didn't feel a noticeable difference in my stride but obviously faster - particularly when going slightly uphill. It feels like a bit of a cheat, I'll be sure to try again in normal shoes |

A few guys I run with on our Saturday morning challenge swear by these fancy shoes. They’re all easily sub 20 runners though, out of my league, the times & the shoes.

You can do it without the shoes, all but one of my sub 20 times were done in these. I wasn't naturally fast to begin with. The vapor flys change your running style a bit, encouraging longer but slightly slower strides, which isn't ideal. According to one study I found - but lost the link to - you are more energy efficient doing higher cadence and slightly shorter strides than your (or anyone's) typical running form. This raises the question why does anyone's average running form not cleave to the faster cadence/shorter strides? This isn't the link I remember but does delve into answering the above question: hvmn.com Apparently your unconscious form is NOT you most optimal (it's not bad, it's just not the best). I seem to remember in my link there was a very particular sweet spot, just slightly higher cadence, slightly shorter stride length, after that, there's no benefit. I say this because I couldn't break sub 40, (and have only done so once now), until I bought cheap minimalistic shoes, the Puma H streets £40 which reduced my stride length (because it hurt to do otherwise), and I had to increase cadence to keep speed (I was trying to improve form). Within 2 months I went from 42 to 40, and then went on to break all my pbs in the next year. They stopped selling the H streets, and no other running shoe has suited me as well since. I sourced a second hand pair 3 years on, broke my half mara pb by 30 seconds, and then that was it, I wrecked those shortly after. BUT in my case it wasn't so much the shoes, BUT the change in style that they enforced which was beneficial. So - my advice would be, there are yet more tools in your arsenal than expensive shoes (and I've not broken one pb in magic shoes, they don't actually help me very much, I seem to be a partial non-responder). If you've plateauxed, keep journeying, keep investigating, find what works for you. |

18:53 (72:09%) in these bespoke racers yesterday. Not pictured is the ventilation feature on the big toe of the left foot! Need to get the twins out of private nursery before I start splashing out on the cheat boots. Am intrigued to see if they would make a difference, but my miserly character trump's my curiosity. |

Interesting Chrisull. I actually have some bright yellow Jamaica puma H streets I picked up for £10 back in 2006 I think. I used the as gym shoes because they breath well and weigh virtually nothing. ![]() I injured my Achilles cycling (saddle too high) a few years ago and haven't got the range of movement back so switched from 4mm drop Saucony's to 10mm Nike Pegasus so keep that happy whilst I work on flexibility. I still run easy runs in the 4mm Saucony's with no issues. The plated (8mm?) Zoom fly shoes seem to agrevate my plantar fascia on the foot that has the achilles issue. My thinking is that the plate substitutes the ridgid supination part of the gait cycling & takes some load off the PF. The high stack foam looses less energy to ground contact than my daily trainer and perhaps those combined with a lack of ground feel maybe makes my leg lazy through these impacts? At the moment not an injury and not enough runs for correlation to equal causation but I'll keep them for only speedwork or racing. I don't feel a benefit on declines or the flat. I do feel a benefit on inclines. I think it's slightly easier to get knees lift? |

Wow Paul, those have seen better days. Guessing 100s of miles on a camber or right glute medius let's your leg swing in to centre line? (My right leg does that) What is the mileage on those? +1000? |
