Re: Garmins in 5k - last 5k I did I used it to help me pace the first mile (current pace indicator is awful so I just checked time at 0.5 mile and 1 mile) and then ran the rest as hard as I could. I am still learning how to pace 5k properly so in that respect it is really useful.

Ooh, just noticed this thread, can I tag along?
I'm stuck at around 21:10 - 21:30 at the mo, but I know I can do 20:xx
I doubt very much that I'll be able to do a sub 20 5k this year at least.

You are on fire Ian after your mile (your lungs probably litterally), let me know when and I'll have a bet, as you'll smash your PB!

I'd think it wouldn't be so much of an issue with a half, as you're not using your lungs so muc.h.... mind, I don't know any science. Anyway, I did better in my 5k time trial with a cold than in the same race 2 weeks later without a cold, but with warmer weather.
