Crikey spoiled for choice today, comeback lp from Camera Obscura, new lp from Jessica Pratt sounding amazing love the girl group vibes, "new" Broadcast lp 13 years after the death of singer Trish Keenan - demos from the last few years of the band, better than many bands fully formed stuff, oh and Kamasi Washington has a new lp too

Insane amount of great albums being released at the mo. Beth Gibbons and Shellac both just out, both pretty incredible (if you thought Portishead 3 was their best lp and the Rip was their best track then I think the Beth Gibbons one will be on repeat). Broadcast's demos, I'm liking Cassie Kinoshi, big band jazz meets late period Talk Talk, Group Listening mining that Durutti Column, pastoral kraut rock and new age vein. Keep on meaning to pick up the latest Daisy Rickman one, I've accidentally seen her twice live and one more deliberately, and she's been pretty awesome. The Jessica Pratt one continues to enchant, definitely up there as one of the best ones this year. And that's just scratching the surface of the last few weeks.

I've been waiting for the Beth Gibbons record for so long, I spent the 90s living in Bristol and she and Portishead, well the whole scene actually, will always be close to my heart. It's so good, it may well even challenge Sprints for my album of the year.

Quite a lot of music from the Big Weekend is on iPlayer - I've been waiting for housemate to take a nap so I can watch Declan McKenna and Everything Everything's sets...

Quiet on this thread.

Today there is new Bonnie Prince Billy. Ok it's not a solo exercise, it's a bonkers 2 song lp - 20 minutes each, with Nathan Salsburg (solo guitarist extraordinaire and collaborator/partner of Joan Shelley, who is also brilliant) and Tyler Trotter (keyboard player in Om), and they are covering two Lungfish songs (Lungfish being weird punk/hardcore, on the Discord record label, very mono-chordal). Just listening now, it's an absolute delight.

Also new Beak lp (Geoff Barrow - Portishead) is really good, although the vocals are a little anti-septic at time.

About This Thread

Maintained by McGoohan
As a spin-off from Joopsy's excellent Albums of 2022 thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/albums-of-2022-62537/ this is a new thread where we commit to listen to one new album a week in 2023. Allowing a couple of weeks off for life commitments etc, that's 50 albums in the year.
EDIT - new and improved (i.e. exactly the same) for 2024
