I have the possibility of a run almost identical to Pothunter's leading effort, depending on how many nettles block a short diversion for a 26th square.

Slightly modified today and got 25 but missed 2 becuase of cutting corners, and can see a little dink to get another. I reckon 28 squares in under 4km is doable.
