A reader's letter to the Guardian:

How are the Tories going to come up with future policies when there are no fag packets?

Was feeling a little down looking at the state of UK politics etc. Then spoke to elder son on phone this morning. He's an instructor at an outdoor activity centre that does KS2 residentials - so age 7-11. Asked him how his week had been - a difficult one he said. He'd had a group with several on the autistic spectrum, one girl who is in remission from cancer and had found out at beginning of week that her stoma bag would be lifelong, and another girl who's mother is in hospital after a serious motorbike accident. Difficult he said, but rewarding, finding ways to give all those kids an experience that would lift them above the struggles of their everyday life. I'm proud of him and his priorities in life, and it gave me a lift.

So much about today but one highlight was seeing a hummingbird hawk moth on our buddleia this afternoon. I know they aren't especially rare but I've never seen one in our garden before.

Volunteering at the Ride to the Wall at the National Memorial Arboretum today. Made me smile, but also quite emotional to listen to people's stories.

Watching a tiny spider running laps round the bezel of my new Garmin watch. It must have done at least twenty circuits before heading off for a more leisurely stroll across my jacket.

Just a slight misunderstanding of how to use a Garmin for laps then. Could have been a manual translation problem from English to Arachnish.
