My friend on Challenger South is travelling at 4.5kph.
No idea if that is quick enough.
I have another friend possibly doing the Challenger North from tomorrow.

I think we’re going to nip out in a while to do a bit of cheering on. Stunning day here

Grotty this side of the hill DT, but will probably nip out later today and cheer on the front of the main race!
See the leading two guys in the South have both pulled out. Another case of pushing each other too hard too early?
Generally looking at the number of retirements, and how far they hadn't got, it feels like a number of participants don't have the experience required for the event. I know it's been hard going under foot, but that's not exactly unexpected, and the actual weather hasn't been too bad.

Is the Pen-y-ghent climb being by-passed for safety reasons ? The leader in the Challenger looks to be taking a different path, of course he could be retiring or has taken a wrong turn

The answer is yes, there's a diversion. It's just been posted on the Spine Facebook page "The very heavy snowfall in the area, and a combination of other adverse weather conditions, means the trail over Pen-Y-Ghent is not currently passable. Consequently, you'll see runners in the Montane Winter Spine Challenger South taking the lower route to Horton-in-Ribblesdale. This diversion has been marked and our Spine Safety Teams are in the area monitoring the situation. There are currently no plans to lift this diversion, but we will post another update if the situation changes. Spine HQ"

The guys leading the South both dropped pit at the same point and one of their dots was set to "hidden"by the time I was looking. The other dot went post-haste to Settle and stopped in the area of a hospital.
