That's what I thought, @Ian5. Comrades is Comrades and isn't a race you'd expect to have to widen its customer base to fill places, but going from 4:50 to 5:00 seems rather tokenistic as regards "more inclusive". But the link in Charles's post a couple of pages back about the history of Comrades cut-offs is really interesting, with the 4:50 time possibly in line to be a short blip in the timescale of the event. (I'd love to be the sort of runner who would be in the market for an iconic event like Comrades, but I'm not. I don't convert well from shorter distances to the marathon, and convert even less well from the marathon to the sort of distances that require mental fortitude and multi-tasking.) |

Yes I didn't realise it's only been a small time for the 4:50,there has been a few controversies over the last few years around cut offs being changed and it resulted in a really poor experience in 2023,hopefully this is them listening to runners.

currently dot watching the Spine - first person has just finished the Sprint (almost 9.5hrs to do 42miles) - and about 2hrs slower than the fastest time. I suspect that conditions are horrendous and it looks like everyone is moving a lot slower than expected. I suspect that a lot on the Challenger don't get to Hebden ahead of the cutoff

Friend of mine from school is doing the Challenger South and he is ten miles behind the lantern rouge. Not optimistic for him.

The dots are being a bit weird. People who have retired are getting a black dot but their red or yellow dot is still staying on the map. But yes, looks like slow progress this year. |

The leading men in the Challenger South are nearly 20 miles behind the men's record lantern. The leading women are 14 miles behind theirs.

And to make it more fun it's now snowing down in the valley, so it'll be more fun a couple of miles up the hill on the PW.
