I read that article with interest...I'm doing a 25 hour track event in a couple of weeks (bonus hour because the clocks go back that night, hurrah!) which is a long, long way out of my comfort zone! I figure if I might want to do a 100-miler in the future it'll be good practise to be out for a long time but in a controlled environment (ie, I have a chair over there, and if I need to stop I just can, rather than be in the middle of nowhere). In all honesty I'm expecting to call it a day before the full time is up, but it'll be an experience for sure...

Depends what 100-miler you're thinking of, but I'd suspect a 24 (25!) hour track event would be potentially harder. Mentally yes. Physically it'll be utterly repetitive.

*me, but I guess the sentiment of “us” rather than the grammatical abomination of “we” holds true too

I’m re- reading Michael Stocks’ book One Track Mind (mentioned in the article) Really gives a flavour of what it’s like

I tried a track 24hr once on a 1.2km cycle track and I hated it, the thought of running 400m track loops is crazy! I am wondering how I am going to manage 10 mile loops next month as I get bored far too easily...

I've looked at about 4500 ultra performances of varying distances, and compared these to the best marathon time of the runner. I grouped all of these performances by distance e.g. 50k-ish, 50miles-ish, 100k-ish, etc, and calculated the median pace ratio for each group. So for example, in the 150k-ish group, I included all the performances between 135k and 165k, and worked out a median pace ratio of 1.84. This means that the median pace of the runners was 1.84 times their marathon pace. I bundled all that into a calculator - you just need to plug in your best (or current) marathon time to see your predictions: fetcheveryone.com/training-calculators-ultra2.php As with any predictor based on median figures, 49.9% of you will be quicker, and 49.9% of you will be slower. But it'll be great for someone |
