Mother T, that groupset with the 48/31 chainset was specifically developed as a gravel bike/ off road groupset by Shimano with better off road/ poor weather condition shifting. I don't know the ins and outs but apparently gravel riders didn't want/need the options of road compact/ full chainset gearing (50/34 or 53/39). Hope it helps.
Kieren, I suspect that the usual discounting will apply but it will be on fewer bikes and with smaller discounts. Most of the bikes I have looked, e mountain bikes, at are out of stock in my frame size, so I expect lack of supply will change the market dynamics this Autumn.
Gooner, I can't see the exact specs for your Voodoo but the closest I can see shows a 24 gear setup which I assume is a triple on the front and a 8 on the back. You might want to look at what gears you spend most of your time in and then see how that links into the sweetspot of the 2 you have picked out. Having a road and a cyclocross bike, I still prefer the roady for commuting in good weather (nicer gearing on tarmac) but winter commuting/summer commuting with off road detours on the way back the cyclocross wins hands down (relaxed ride position, bad weather gearing). Good luck with whatever you choose.

Thanks for that folks.
My current Voodoo does indeed have 3 up front and 8 at the back but I couldn't tell you how many teeth it has either end without going to count. I do however almost always find myself on the middle at the front so may have a check before I ride in a while and see what marries up best.

The more I ride my road bike, the more I'd like a gravel bike  The road bike certainly goes places it was never meant to, but even if it was just on the roads round here, a gravel bike would be an asset.
(Just passed 10 000 km logged on my road bike two days ago. Might be time to buy that new chain now.)

The roads round here almost dictate that you give up road bike aspirations at the moment so gravel made sense. Especially with a national cycle network route 400m from my door and Sutton Park and Cannock Chase within 10 miles rides.

Gooner made an assumption on the tooth counts on 8 speed, the triple shouldnt be out. The blue shading signifies where your (?) middle ring and rear cassette overlaps with the gearing on both bikes you are looking at. Upshot is that broadly they are similar
