Adrian, it's tight adductors (muscles on inner thighs). You'll get used to it in time...and they'll become a little more pliable given time. Or you can sit kneeling...with hips on feet until your thighs get used to being cross legged. Hubby hates sitting cross legged because his hips are tight and his pelvis leans backwards...which is when I tell him to grab a cushion to sit on so his hips are higher than his knees.

garfield to me I feel like the skin over my knees is tight but assume it's hamstrings ?
what do you think?
I know I have tight hamstrings

Pix, that might be tight quads not hamstrings. If it were hamstrings, you wouldn't like sitting with the legs straight out front.

Oh thank you Garfield that makes perfect sense. Well diagnosed from my rambling descriptions!

I hadn’t thought of kneeling ( I can do that ok) and it makes a lot more sense than sitting with my legs out in front of me allowing me to sit tall and relax without having to brace my lower back.

I’ll be doing that tomorrow.

Yay, and you can work on the adductors and in time you'll be able to sit more comfortable cross legged as those adductors become a little more flexible. Or you could place pillows/cushions under your knees for additional support.

I will work on them and as soon as they become sore I’ll move into the kneeling position that you suggested. Pillows under the knees to support also a great idea so I’ll try that tomorrow to take a little of the weight.

No worries Pix, I used to have really tight quads that I couldn't kneel comfortably, so know the tight around the knees feeling only too well...though I still hate doing a reclining hero pose because of those pesky quads!
