i have an electronic OS map for my area (www.tracklogs.co.uk) where you can select the exact area you want

I use MemoryMap Which has elevation data and a virtual fly through of your route.

I use Tracklogs as well, EP. Is cool, but still doesn't show you what the state of the footpaths are going to be! I once ended up at at the end of a path which went down the side of someone's house. It was neck high in nettles. Thankfully it was the middle of summer, they were out in their garden, and let me through their garden to the road. I do believe the local council are supposed to make sure footpaths are maintained?

the council are yes but they don't actively check them I believe they rely on teh public saying they need looking at

it does make your runs more fun if you hit the tracks

I remember a path a few months ago that had me reduced to tears because of the nettles. And that was walking, with trousers on, but they stung through the trousers. I had made my mind up to complain about it, but then was just so relieved to get to the end I forgot. I don't mind the odd nettle, but this was about 400 yards of waist high ones. We kept thinking it must get better. It didn't, but once you're so far through them, turning back would be just as bad as carrying on.
