Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

@Windsor Wool We all got old and injured.

It's sad as sub 3.15 was the one target I had left I never achieved, every other one (sub 1.30 half, sub 40 10k, do an ultra) I did, and the ones I didn't quite officially do (sub 32 5 miles, sub 19 5k) - I did during sections of races so I feel like I did them.

I still know people who did their fastest marathons at 55 plus, I haven't abandoned hope, but the twin arthritis and mensiscus tear make it highly unlikely. But I know people who've had similar issues and are still running 15 years on competitively. I think losing weight is the first key.

Someone might have posted it here, or I have might have just seen on social media, but Alex Hutchinson had a recent article on the benefits of having a massive break from training as an older athlete and coming back stronger... who knows? outsideonline.com

Missed out by 29s last year but certainly not doing a spring marathon. Too much going on with moving abroad at some point so sticking to shorter stuff.

Got my eye on maybe doing a marathon in October/November.

I'm in for another shot this year. Targeting 3:05 for Christchurch, NZ in April.

Currently just doing some ticking over maintenance running while we're away on a 3 week Kiwi road trip. Back home this Sunday coming, so next week kicks back in properly. I've started using a coach to get me from my current PB of 3:12, hopefully down to a sub 3 by October this year. So 3:05 at Christchurch should be a good marker for me.

I have a few key markers that I want to hit along the way, to ensure I'm still on track. A quick 5k early on. Kind of done one of these already with an 18:59 but conditions and distance were dubious, so I need to re-nail this early. A sub 40 10k race. I did this already in my last half, so it's definitely do-able as a stand alone 10k race effort. A sub 1:25 half. I'm very close to this already. If I hit those, I should be good for the main marathon targets.

I had been doing a bit of blogging around progress with a coach but its been very quiet over Christmas. Again, I'll likely kick back in with this from next week or so.

In terms of Threadmin, I guess we could look to swap threads @Windsor Wool but equally, I'm happy to carry on with the sub 3:30. Lovely posters in all of the threads so easy as really.

I reckon sub 3:15 is out of reach for me just now, but getting back under 3:30 should be very achievable if I get myself organised for an autumn marathon. Maybe 3:15 is possible for 2026!

I’ll be back at London in April as a VI guide runner, but that’ll be targeting somewhere between 3:45 and 4:00.

I doubt I will run another marathon but I do often think I would like to have a bash and 3:15 would be a nice goal

This thread may be a bit quiet, but 3:15 is still a big goal I think. Isn't it 55-59 male age group's London GFA? It is Boston's 45-49 group as well I think, and getting around that is still a big goal for me, if I can get back to it.

Fergus, I am also hoping for sub-3:30 and then hopefully kick on again from there, but we shall see.

You’re right @Chrisull, we got old and also got a lot of miles on the clock between us. The shame is that there was never really a younger group come through and replace us. I wonder whether that’s a FE demographic thing though rather than our issue!

@Mark J 🇳🇿 let me know if you do want to take on threadmin. It’d have to be on top of what you’re doing already I’m afraid. No harm if not.

@rhb heresy!!

Another ex-regular who currently has no plans for another attempt.

Moved over to ultras a few years ago after giving up on the sub-3 aim that I'd held for a few years. Trail running was always my first love, coming from a hillwalking background
