Thanks for that larkim - a minor quibble, does JD really now describe the gaps between tempo pieces as rests? My understanding (2nd ed) is that they are supposed to be continuous steady pace running, the idea is really to provide a quick moment of stress relief in what would otherwise be a large block of tempo. It's not really interval/rest in the commonly understood sense though.

I certainly didn't pay £200 for them (and wouldn't)! £140 thank you and sold some of my record collection to finance them. (£395 of records to be precise!!!! Who knew 90s techno and indie could command some tasty prices)
And it's more because I'm a bit down on myself currently and I need a confidence booster, otherwise I'm likely to turn up and go, oh it's gonna go crap again, and from that a crap marathon will definitely come about.

I saw that too Larkim, the VFs being used at Snowdonia. I wouldn't wear my Zoom Fly's there.

@jda yes, they are rests on the Kindle 3rd ed version. Surprised me too.

My book which is the 3rd edition mixes these up and sometimes they are rests and sometimes steady running. I tend to always take the rest as thats easier garmin wise to manage

Why would it make a difference on the Garmin? Surely going for rest rather than steady running changes the session.
Original Gerschler intervals had the speed of recovery going up rather than the effort as fitness improved IIRC.

Chris - What sort of style of 90s Techno was it? I am being serious here by the way! Name me some artists?

Larks - Thanks for doing that.
Just to check my understanding, if the max of the plan is 55 miles, then for week 1 (80%) you would do 44 miles of easy running?
If so, what would be helpful is to put the easy mileage in the catch all session so you can see what the total is for the week. Or have I missed the point!

I think that it would be 44 miles in total.
Then he sets prescribed % of your totals to be at the various paces, e.g. no more than 10% of the total to be tempo, so if your week's mileage is 50, 5 would be T pace.
That was how it worked for the half marathon plan I did recently anyway. But that plan didn't give weekly mile totals at all, so it was up to me to decide the weekly mile come I wanted, then plan the sessions into it and select the number of intervals / reps / T miles in a session based on the ratios. Takes more planning and patience than having it laid out but allows more flexibility for individuals. I had to make a conscious effort to plan recovery / cutback weeks in, as the plans don't naturally show them which could be an issue.
