Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

lol no falls and no taper issues so far. Had my pre race sports massage at lunchtime. Only two runs to go.

Seen Lord Fetch's latest about marathon pacing? He had 23/695 runners (and these are defined as experienced) managed a negative split. A measly 3.3%, kind of puts into perspective how hard it is. It's a definite aim for me this time round.

Must admit I can't help but wonder whether planning for a +1 or +2 min split might be a better strategy. You certainly can't bank a lot of time, but maybe hoping for no slowdown at all might be a bit optimistic.

Baz - How have you felt on no running two days before a marathon? Also how does it compare to your prep for other races? It feels like a long time for someone that runs the amount you do and is trying to stay sharp.

Running short and easy (with potentially a few bursts) the day before especially if the day before that is rest won't make you tired, but it could potentially make your legs feel nice and springy early on.

Totally different distances for me but that's essentially what my last two days before a race are about.

Good luck whatever you do.

I have negative split twice. Both were planned and some way short of my best form and I knew I was in shape to run the way I did.

My best marathons have been narrow positive splits

My two best marathons were:

1:29:36 / 1:30:51 so a positive by 1:15
1:30:07 / 1:30:50 and a positive by 0:43

I will be aiming for c 1:29:40 @ halfway on Sunday

Baz - With your two best having a 2nd half of pretty much exactly the same to the second, would 1:29:00 at the half be pushing it too much? Then a 1:30:50/1 again will be just fine šŸ˜›

Iā€™m far from an expert (others here better placed) but 1:29:40 sounds like it is cutting things very fine. Choose to ignore me if you do wish and go and smash it!

I could give you examples of 1:29 first halfs and well over 1:30:51 in the 2nd half !

I know I am cutting it fine, but that feels to me like the most sensible strategy.

Baz, you overcooked the first half @1.29.36. My first sub 3 came from a 1.29.56 first half šŸ˜‰
