I can't offer anything in terms of pacing other than my strategy which was to hold on and hold on until you were 100% confident that you could get to the finish at the pace you were setting yourself. Before that it was about letting someone else set the pace in the context of that pace being something I should have been able to achieve simply based on a straight reading of my training.

Congratulations to Steve & Gus. Excellent pacing (I hope) Steve.

Loving the discussion of shoe weight and shoe weighing, especially doing it surrepticiously. I bought three pairs of Asics Hyperspeed 3 back in 2010 (217g for size 44) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003QJEN3C.

I thought as they were cheap (£40) and lightweight they wouldn't last long. I've done all of my road races in them since then and am still on the second pair (fist pair got chewed by the dog). I'm not sure how the rubber will degrade when stored in the wardrobe but there's not much cushioning anyway.

Any hope of my doing Abingdon, even as a jog around the course, has now ended. After some tedious injuries I have had a nasty gastric flu bug for the last couple of weeks and have therefore decided it is best to start building up to the Lanzarote Running Challenge in 6 weeks, using that as a base to start London training. It's a shame as I was looking forward to buying WW the pint I owe him and to help celebrate his and CWs moment of triumph.

Thanks for the inputs, guess I'll run it on feel!

ah, I am really sorry to hear that BR. I like the sound of that Lanzarote challenge though, enjoy that.

The pint will wait until April!

CW - fair enough but I still think you need a cap on the pace, I mean a 'I won't go faster that 6:xx' limit as we all know that the 1st few miles can feel pretty easy (and if the forecast is to be believed they will be strongly downwind).

Again, from my limited experience - don't run on feel CW! Because "feel" will tell you at 5 miles in running 7:20s that this pace is so easy you can keep it up all day, and that will be the wrong feeling!

Your MLR yesterday looked very solid indeed - what %age max were your final couple of miles of HR at? Unusually you ran that MLR faster than I would have done (think I averaged 8:04 for that last 12 miler compared to your 7:45) but if that felt good then that should give you confidence.

How about taking a leaf out of my race day - let the 3:15 pacers get 20-30s ahead, be very disciplined with only catching them slowly up to about 5 or 6 miles then sitting with them (assuming it feels comfortable) through half way. After half way, try to sit with them even if it does feel a little tougher at times and see if you can hang with their group through to at least 20 miles - and then start to judge it on feel!

Things that I am certain helped me - not thinking about my own pace, taking additional food on early and regularly, drinking sufficiently, and letting anything that was happening happen slowly - e.g. catching the pacers, coming back to them after drinks etc etc.

I may unfortunately be out of mobile signal on Sunday am (son is running a fell race in the back of beyond), but if I can get a signal I'll be paying close attention!

Not sure if there are pacers at Abingdon. I'd suggest exactly what larks did CW - tell yourself you'll stick to 7:20s until 18 miles and then push on quicker if you're feeling good.

I found Abingdon tough when I did it 2009 - the two laps thing was tricky (seeing 16 mile signs when you're only at 6 (or whatever it was) etc. But it was my first mara raced and a lot of things were new. The pee stop (don't stop to pee!), only 2 gels (more like 7 or 8 now!), being surprised when it felt hard at 12, then 15 and 18 (perfectly normal, just keep the confidence), hitting the wall at 22 miles (my only time where it properly happened, grabbed a Lucozade sport and saved my race), finishing feeling very grey. But happy with my first sub 3:15!

You're in much better shape than I was, you'll smash it. Just start steady!

B Rub - sorry to hear you're not feeling well. Hope you recover fully soon. So annoying when a bug scuppers your race. Rest up and start again refreshed. :-) G

Puma H streets were 164g (sigh) and they still managed a bit of cushioning in the sole. Measured my Invivo barefoot thingies which are no good for running in (sole too thin and despite being a good fit, the extra space in the toebox doesn't suit me) and they are 225g. They do function nicely as slippers tho.

True, true. But equally, who says non-pace runners have it either! At least they are *supposed* to have it!
