Interesting tweak on a standard theme. There are plenty of opinions about how to run the ideal race (the whole even pacing debate etc etc). If you were a pacer, how would you pace run, bearing in mind what you're trying to do is take a group of unknown people through to a specific time outcome? Would you:- a) run a highly specific course orientated pace designed to even out the lumps into constant effort? b) stick rigidly to the pace per mile for all 26 miles? c) adopt a small positive split strategy of say 90s - 120s at half way, and evenly pace both halves? d) follow any one of the above, but aiming for 60s inside the time target to build in some comfort? e) something else? I'm sure at least one answer is "run the idealised even pace race as that is best in all circumstances", but maybe when you're catering for lots of people that might not be ideal on the day? |

a + d, but maybe aim for 30 secs under. I've done plenty of pacing at parkrun, and aim for constant effort and say 10 secs under. Would love to have a go at a few longer races - nothing beyond a HM until I've got a lot more experience of running marathons though

I have paced solo and was the official 3.10 pacer at Brighton the first year it ran. This year i paced at Fsrnborough half, Stubbington 10km , Wokingham half, Eastleigh 10km, Burnham half. Also various parkruns. orangeapproach.wordpress.com I wrote this a while back but it is what i believe |

a) and d), I think I would do. Well run Gus - I think I would find it tough running alone for so long in the second half; fair play for keeping up the pace there or thereabouts. And congratulations Steve! Looking forward to hearing more, once the hangover recedes Ex-hurricane Ophelia is all anyone is talking about over here today. Schools all closed. Some lucky (soft, public sector ;-)) folk getting sent home early. Glad I'm not run-commuting, sounds like I'd be in danger of getting a trampoline on the noggin. |

Nice blog post Gobi, thanks. Definitely I can see that pacing an individual is very different to pacing a group.

Back to shoes. Here's a post by Daniels on it:- runsmartproject.com There he's saying that 100g made 0.83s of a difference over a 5m40 mile. 0.83s/340s = 0.00244%. 3h15m = 11700s, 0.00244% x 11700s = 28.5s. Is it worth it? Or is my maths wrong? |

Your maths is wrong. Or rather, you misread. The 0.83 was per ounce (28g for the youngsters). So 100g is about 3.5 times as much effect. Quite a decent chunk I'd say. Note that shoe weights are usually quoted for one, so 50g each is 100g total. There are a few people I can think of who would appreciate a couple of mins off their marathon times...myself included. Though there is more to a shoe than weight alone (as the linked article makes clear)

lark, given my PB of 3:00:27 then I would say that it would have been worth it and I clearly missed a trick No idea about your maths though.... |
