Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Well checking back in following my week away and all I see is impressive racing and training. Big congrats to Matt that is an excellent result, and also excellent racing from JB.

I had a feast of running for me while away as I can generally only get 3 runs a week done, but I enjoyed good use of the treadmill in the holiday centre, and yes I know some will argue that the treadmill is not a fair comparison to the road as it is easier but to that i will state two points:
1) try standing up on a treadmill (no tv or music playing) knowing that you are going to run 18 miles on it at 8:30 minute pace therefore for 2 hours and 40 minutes - then tell me its easy
2) I am one of those people who runs faster on the road than the treadmill, I find the treadmill tougher.

Anyway again just to say well done to all for the training and racing

I tried a long run on a treadmill once and gave up after 3 miles, so much respect.

I'm nearly finished my first taper week. Just back from 4 miles which were meant to be at race pace, but ended up doing them at 7.03/mile. Felt good to get a bit of speed up. :)

12 miles for my long run tomorrow.

Did 36K (22.3M) with 5K @ 3:15 pace this morning. Went fine but speeding up to the 3:15 pace was weird after lots of slow running. Off to Italy on Thu so running will suffer there :-(

Back on the road last night, did 21 miles in 2:56 which felt fine, was going to keep going a bit longer to either 3:00 or even stay on to 3:15 but felt leggy so decided wasn't going to do me any real good.

Dilemma now, I like a full 3 week taper (long run next weekend no more than about 13 miles, then the next weekend about 8 - 10 then the following weekend is the race. However because I was injured for a time, I am toying with another long one next weekend (20 miles again) and a 2 week taper, any thoughts??

Good running Woffy. I think the answer to your question would be: "how quickly do you recover?"

Gnerally recovery time is related to mileage. If you are doing 60-70 miles a week it should be no problem, 30 miles and I would say keep it shorter.

BR I would be doing nothing like 50 miles never mind 60-70, altho' i do tend to recover well, little or no stiffness today. Think I will stick to the 3 week taper tho', not sure I will get any great benefits from doing another 20+ miler.

The only reason I am thinking about it is that the only time I ever did more than 1 20 mile run before any marathon (and I did two that time) turned out to be my PB so its a bit tempting.

I'd do the extra long one. The last few miles at Nottingham hurt much more than London, where I felt fine (just annoyed because I knew I was going to just miss out on sub-3:15). And although I was faster and stronger last week, I hadn't done enough long runs (7 for London, 3 for Nottingham), and I think that was what made the last 10k so tough. A 2 week taper should be fine, but 3 is probably better - so it's a judgement call.

Woffy - I'd agree with Matt - though it would, in my view, be more for the psychological benefit - i.e. another 20miler under the belt and the PB last time you did 2 20milers. It is with that view in mind that I'm planning to get up (very) early on Saturday and do a hilly 20miler, with over 1000ft of climbing in the 1st 4miles (to prepare for the Snowdonia marathon)

MtR and JB thanks for the input, I do think the mind is an important part so doing a second 20 miler may be an advantage that way. Will prob wait to see how next weekend goes as I am away on a course all day Friday and Saturday so that may decide it for me.
