KB I think that the main things is getting the miles in. One of my main worries re my sub 3h15 attempt is, given personal circs, I don't get many opportunities to go out for long runs (haven't done anything more than 10 miles in the last month or two - though last one was 20miles) and that may come back to haunt me. I am hoping to fit in a 20miler a few weeks before the marathon (hopefully a confident booster?)

I'm planning a 20 mile run this evening to make up for missing yesterday's 12 mile run. I've been looking for a way to fit an extra 20 mile in to my schedule and having to miss yesterday's run due to family commitments might prove to be a blessing in disguise. I'll feel much more confident with another very long run in the bag.

daviec I'm not sure whether it is something I've read, but I can't seem to get the need to do another 20miler out of my head

I've done 3 so far, and had just one more planned but I don't think another will do me any harm at this stage.

I've done 3 20 milers in the past but will do more this time around. I usually do one that is the amount of time I want to finish in. So for sub 3:30 last year one LSR of 3h30.

Before London I ran 1x18, 4x20 plus 1x22.
This time I couldn't run any 20 milers whilst on holiday (too darn hot, plus they take too long!), but since then I have done 1x16, 1x20 plus 1x22. I hope that's enough, and I did find the long ones easier than I did in the spring, plus my non-LSR mileage is quite a bit higher (and faster) as well.
The consensus of people I've spoken to is that the 3 key sessions for mara training are the LSR, a midweek long(ish) run at MP or close to, and a tempo session. If you can fit in an interval session or hill session that's a bonus - which you might well need to get sub-3:15.

Went out for 21 miles last night. Chose a farily hilly route to mimic the marathon route I'll be doing. Targetted 8:15/mile and finished with an average 8:13/mile so very happy with that.
Looking back on my training log I've done 1x18, 3x20, and 1x21 so far. I'd planned a 22 mile for this weekend, but I might just make it a 3:15 and see how far I get. I'm happy enough with that now and feel much more confident after yesterday's run.

I am happy to have got a 16 miler in this morning before clocking in for work at 8, felt pretty good and kept up mile pace of just under 8 and a half minutes for a 2:13 run.
All I can say lads is fair play to you all on the 20+ milers you are doing, you are way ahead of me in that regard, particularly after the calf problem. If all goes well I will do an 18 miler this coming weekend and then 1 x 20 miles the week after which will take me to 3 weeks before the Brussels mara. I usually taper from 3 weeks but may do one last 3 hour run the following week then taper, see how it feels.

Well done daviec on your 21miler.
Woffy, I was speaking to someone last week and he was saying that he didn't run more than 20miles prior to his 2 hilly autumn marathons (both done in less than 3h30m I seem to recall). However, for me, there is something niggling away at me saying that I need to do another 20miler in the next few weeks!
