I am trying to declutter now but so far have failed I think many mistakes of things given away and massive regrets have made me nervous but part of our pension plan is the house so I’m going to have to be brave sooner than later.

I had an immense, terrifying, brutal clear out 6 months ago. Combined a purge of all my late wife’s stuff, with pruning my own stuff down to a reasonable enough level to move into my partner’s place. It was pretty traumatic, some of the stuff that had to go but also cathartic: new life, a real sense of what I needed as opposed to clutter etc. I really felt a bit….unmoored?….for a while and 6 months later I’m still not quite settled, but gettibg a lot closer. |

@TROSaracen that's more our case too, trying to make life simpler and clearer especially when we travel. We've got a lifetime of stuff though, including from parents, former business and work clothes.

When I retired, I loved the process of giving away all my work clothes, especially the business suits and uncomfortable shoes.

decluttering here would be massively aided by first rehoming two boys and their stuff - as well as that belonging to Daughter. Though at the moment we're going backwards as MiL keeps sending Husband home with stuff that she thinks we'd like and value but is actually fairly nasty tatt. I can feel a car boot sale coming on |

Gnome’s room appears clear of his stuff until you open the cupboard which is literally stuffed with his stuff

Looking back I was surprised how disturbed I was when I reduced possessions by so much in the great declutter. For years when younger I hardly owned anything. I guessing it’s an age thing, we surround ourselves with more and more clutter, memorabilia etc as we go. It’s a comfort blanket of security (and can develop into full scale hoarding - think my late wife was a borderline hoarder, kept everything). I’m glad I did it, least I’m back to low possessions now, no doubt it will start creeping up again… |
