We grow into the space we have As adults a bigger house is seen as success
As such we then fill said house with crap!
Add the other things like (using my parents as examples) two independent households coming together and you end up with duplicate shit!
Then add hoarding tendencies (my mum!) and ….. they have a 4 bed house the size of a 5 bed with (now) just mum but no free space!
It’s that thought that keeps us from filling too much space although we still have plenty!

Just back from a run
In a couple of weeks I can claim my tax back. This will then be new trainers and race entries I think! Just need to find a race to inspire me

A lot of our identities and memories are bound up in objects. Regrettably
Emigrating to Japan, and even more so retuning more than a decade later, helped to slow the growth of clutter for us. Gave us a good impetus for filtering our possessions.
We’ve still managed to fill an over-large house with an unlimited volume of inherited stuff undoubtedly coming our way over the next years or decade. I’m vaguely thinking of downsizing but realistically that’s probably some way off.

Tax refunds are great for that. I felt it was like found money, even though it was essentially being given back my own money! 🤪😂 Last time I got a tax refund I used it to buy a new Garmin!

It’s a variation on Parkinson’s Law I think.
If I go out the amount of stuff I absolutely need varies depending on the number of pockets and the size of the bag I have with me.

Compare and contrast with the 06:00 news on Radio 4. Exactly six minutes’ worth of stuff has happened overnight. Always.

I’m at the stage where I don’t worry about work anymore. No taking on projects no additional work. Do my thing go home.
TRO did you downsize when you moved or just crosstransfered

And despite trying to check in on line for tomorrow mornings flight and still no luck I think it’s a sign - I’m not stressing like I would have been a few months ago I think that tells me a lot.

I’m interested in the decluttering, after spending the weekend helping my in- laws try to clear out and reorganise their spare room. It was exhausting!
They are only a step or two away from being hoarders, and Mr S has similar tendencies. His mum is lovely, but very sentimental and there was stuff all mixed up in drawers and other places, from junk and broken things, to stuff she wants to keep - like cards from her friends and dog tags from much loved pets. Plus what seemed like a tonne of wool that I sorted, then found another cupboard full, that I just shut the door on. And 50 pairs of shoes! We did whittle those down a bit. Apparently there are 2 hoovers in the attic.
But then I look around our place, and you could argue it’s very similar. I have shelves full of books. A box full of run medals and almost every T-shirt from every race I’ve done (10 x Blaydon, 10 x Great North Run).
We won’t have anyone to help us clear out, move furniture and sort through all this when we get older, so I feel like I should start to make a plan.
