And hopefully not being too provocative, but isn't this a good thing for the environment, far from being a timebomb?

bbc.co.uk

I notice the article doesn't mention the ability for the planet to sustain human population, but only mentions lack of population growth in economic, GDP terms. Grrr.

Less people = a good thing for the environment.

Higher retirement age = not great for a lot of people.

I posted something in this thread a few months ago about Portugal’s energy production, lots of wind and hydro but surprisingly little solar iirc

One of our esteemed renewable industry experts should be able to answer - how does this work?!

bbc.co.uk

(Paying windfarms to *stop* generating when network is over supplied.) :-) G

Easier (and cheaper) to curtail wind output than a centralised power plant.

Presumably most CCGT had already been ramped down to minimum.

Nuclear can't be dialled down as quickly.

I get that oversupply has to be curtailed and that wind turbines are a good candidate. But I dint understand the payment mechanism or why they were over paid and then fined?

Their contract must have specified some minimum supply level that they be paid for even if not used. Which is fair enough if you’re investing millions in generation equipment.

As for being overpaid, well someone sent the wrong bill. As Octupus have been doing to us for many months (since the previous lot went bust in fact).

Fair enough jda. I suppose it is that simple. But I just assume that these huge engineering initiatives have basic things like data and monitoring which can provide very clear evidence of operation or not and hence the right billing. But I guess anyone can make mistakes. :-) G

Beatrice is Scotlands oldest offshore wind farm - so the guaranteed Cfd price the owners get for electricity is quite high. If prices are above the Cfd then the windfarm has to pay the difference to the government.

When there is too much supply the grid asks for "bids" from producers to generate less electricity to keep the grid in balance. But in all contracts there are curtailment payment rules to stop generators taking excess profits - sort of a "don't take the piss" provision.

wind farms will provide daily summaries to the grid about how much power they think they will produce that day (sometimes by the hour hour) and the grid use this to determine whether they may need to put in curtailment measures and request bids for payment.

What has been happening is that quite a number of wind farms have overestimated the energy they will produce that day and so result in getting paid curtailment for wind energy they don't actually produce. Bit of naughtiness going on.

About This Thread

Hi
I've seen environment (whether emissions, power, climate change, access to countryside, whatever you think of as "environment") discussed in various threads: Politics (obviously), the Electric Car thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/electric-car-anyone-61481/ , run free's excellent "Competitive Running and Keeping The Environment Clean" fetcheveryone.com/forum/running-competitively-keeping-our-environment-clean-60907/ my own Greta Thunberg thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/greta-thunberg---jfk-for-the-climate-generation-61044/ etc. but I haven't seen a general one.

So here it is. For those interested in the science, the politics, the action for (and I'll state that for me, this is mostly pro-environment, anti-emissions, anti-pollution etc.) and the hope for the future of our planet.
