re Southampton son#2 (who is awaiting a decision from imperial) has mechatronic engineering as his insurance choice at southampton. I think he would be happy there and as others have said an excellent engineering department (his passion is robotics). but the feeling of failure is the overriding emotion for him at the moment.

That’s tough, doc. Difficult to look a year or two ahead and envision yourself being happy with second choice. I’m sure he will be though if that’s the outcome

Some fab results coming in, well done all - Cambridge is brilliant and also neuroscience at Manchester is very, very impressive, and sorry for Stu and Cstar. I think it is most important to get on to that next destination, university or course or job.
fleecy - re gift of the gab - he has his own blog on instagram that is very sweary and very funny (although political and historical rather than personal) but he's very quiet and reserved and quite shy, unless crossed in which case quite capable of unleashing vitriol at anyone who gets in the way!

um
Dr F - has 'your friend' checked the modules of the 2 different courses? They may have a heavy overlap and (in 2nd & 3rd years) be able to more or less do what they originally wanted.
I enjoyed my time at Southampton, but that was 74-77, so maybe not too relevant now !
Those who missed a grade - what was their mock? I know details aren't around yet, but isn't the published intention to meet the mock grade if the school appeals ?

thanks Katie. son#2 applied for the Dyson apprentiship scheme but the application system all went pair shaped through lockdown and he didn't get in.
Um, he didnt put the most effort into his mocks, he always pulls it out of the bag at the last hour. It's how he works. The grades he has been given are the same as his mocks, his predicted (UCAS grades) are significantly higher. I think being a twin is tough when you get really good grades by anyone elses standards, fail to get your first choice and your twin gets straight A*s (and also fails to get in). Im sure once he is at a different institution from his brother he will see that he too is a superstar. But in the meantime I'm being grunted at and moaned at and just want to cry on his behalf. Well back to the hoovering.

Small beer, I know, but Billy will not log on and get his BTec 1st year results. I don't know what he is afraid of. We have never put pressure on him. He got a good report at parents' eve just before lockdown. I'm super frustrated. He's not 18 yet so I'm not even sure why they are going just to him.

With mocks being used as fall back results this year I wonder what that will mean going forward. Will schools continue to use them as a bit of a kick up the or will they start inflating them in case the final exams get cancelled again.
So tough for all involved, congrats to those who are happy with their results and commiserations to those disappointed.
