Well done QP.
Just to share another positive story, my friend’s son struggled at school, didn’t really get on at 6th form, and was told he wasn’t cut out for uni. He had a late diagnosis of autistic spectrum (age 16/17) and left the school he hated that was focussed on results. He’s since done an access course (at a college that supported him) and is now training at uni to be a paramedic.

Good luck QP. My 14 yr old son wears sock and trainers all the time. Quite often his black school socks. Even when I suggest short ones, he says he's happy with what he has on.

That's a great story Meglet - we need to hear more of them. For many families, it's so disheartening to hear narratives than concentrate on mainstream academic successes.

Isn’t it? I think his mum is both relieved and very proud, as neither he nor his sister did particularly well at mainstream school. He was the sort of kid that would be labelled as not trying, or making trouble. He posted a really lovely thing on Facebook basically putting two fingers up to his old school! (Which is one of the local state schools that has a good reputation and people want to get their kids into-but doesn’t suit those that are less academic)

Many colleges try to offer support best tailored to individual needs. The advantages of lower group sizes than in most schools also help to nurture the student who believes that school simply doesn't work for her or him. The more informal approaches to learning can also appeal to students disillusioned with school.

Our secondary school system is a bloody nightmare for so many YP. The school QP went to initially also had good reputation but our experience was that you only do well if academically able with no additional needs. He has grown infinitely as a person since leaving the school system. Academic qualifications are not the be all and end all.
