OuchOuch, I have no experience of ultras, but based on long days out on a bike, I think I'd agree with LMH and want to go down the "real food" option at least some of the time. Perhaps also depending a bit on whether you are going all out for performance, vs having a bit of a walk occasionally while you chew something down. If you're lapping, I assume you can leave yourself a stash of food somewhere on the course rather than lugging a shopping bag round with you?

No need for a shopping bag, you can push a trolley. Brunski - Boston was an awful day so you have much more capability. There's no way you'd get anywhere near your potential in a virtual either. I've run quite a few motor cct marathons and half marathons and they are a solo TT type thing but you do wear a number and have people to chase. You must have sub 245 in there. Depends if you want to chase it. |

Brunski, agree with Tr on this. If you've knocked out a pavement 2.48 you're capable of better. What's up next? I was on the opposite side of the country in pleasant conditions running Newport mara whilst you were getting soaked in Boston. 6m recovery run mid morning then spin tonight. |

I've not planned an autumn marathon just yet, I had a few easy weeks after Boston and then picked up a dose of something flu-like. Think I'm just about fully over that now and just starting to think I need a goal race booking. I was looking at maybe Frankfurt as that falls around half term, but stretching it a bit with the number of 2024 family breaks. If I'm wanting to run 26.2 again this year I'd have to start raising mileage again soon. I'll probably see if I can string together 4 or 5 weeks of decent mileage and evaluate whether I want to run another this year. Longer term I might try Manchester rather than London in 2025, and target the sub 2:50. I got a bit distracted by 2:45 when it was the London elite qualification time and I'd need to be running really strongly to even think of setting off at that pace. |

I've heard good things about Frankfurt and it's pretty easy to get to. I flew via there when I ran Berlin and was surprised how short the flight was. That also gives you circa 20 weeks to build back up and then starting upping the training.

Cheers DT19, yeah it's definitely doable. Just need to see how the next few weeks go as I'd really need to want it to book us a break there. Not as easy a sell to the family as my other marathons abroad (Valencia and Rome). I'll probably stew on it for a few weeks, and if I fancy it I'll check flights and accommodation before dropping it into a conversation and see how it lands. |

Another RW refugee popping in to say hi! Brunski - I ran Frankfurt 10 years ago and I wasn't a fan. Because of the airport location it is prone to getting hit by fog so on an early am flight I ended up sat on the runway for an extra 90mins or so. Other problems (though hopefully these have improved 10 years down the line): Accomodation was scarce - I had to settle for an 'Easy Apartment' (same crowd as do EasyJet). As an area it had a very industrial feel (which will make it a hard sell as a holiday). Everywhere shut quite early on a Sunday. And the course was uninspiring - the start and finish km through the city centre had good support, and the finish in the Festhalle was pretty epic, but there was a large out and back section along a dual carriageway. Good points: The Festhalle finish with a red carpet, dj, and cheerleaders give a great party vibe. The course, though uninspiring in parts, is quick. |

Cheers TippTop , really useful feedback. I think I was a little drawn in by the fancy finish, but yeah the course looks quick but, as you say, uninspiring. I think it’ll be a non-starter, I’ve had a quick google of the area and it’s not screaming holiday with the wife and a couple teenage girls. My other autumn option would be York marathon, the scene of my debut marathon in 2015. I don’t think it’s particularly quick but if I get in shape over the summer and fancy it I could definitely do worse than go there and see if I can sneak under 2:50. |

York was the place of my first sub 3 in 2018, 2.59.54. I'd like to get back there in next couple of years and put some time on that. |
