Hi all I know there is 3.15 thread but I thought I'd start a thread on running a sub 3hr marathon. I'm now at my 4th attempt at Berlin in 10weeks having failed previously at London (3.01) Amsterdam (3.07) and Lochabar (3.10). Hoping to give and receive training advice as well as encouragement to like minded runners hoping to break one of running's major milestones.

This will be only a quick in and out of this thread. Good luck in Berlin, you have been so close so keep up the hard training and go for it *steps back to the 3.15 thread*

Great stuff Twopies. Well done on your achievements thus far.
I have yet to break sub 3:15 but fully intend to at Berlin and hopefully will be nearer to 3 than 3:15.
All being well I will be joining this thread and the quest for a sub 3 mara quite soon.

it's just 24x6.50's then hang in till the finish. worked for me.
3.01 at london is a great attempt, i never beat 3.05 there, but managed sub 3's at manchester and nottingham. you know that if the training goes well you will do it. set 5 mile targets and keep it as even as the course and weather allows. good luck.

Not too much in the way of advice to offer - you've previously got so close it's as much down to mental games as training. Best of luck with it though.
I will add though that you've picked a good course with Berlin. Your 3:01 effort in London would probably have seen you under 3 on the Berlin route - the smooth road surfaces and (usually) windless conditions make for a very quick circuit.
I found the sub 3 pacer to be excellent (even if I followed my own slower starting strategy) but there was a bit of congestion in that group. Also try to meet someone one the course with a bottle of something if you're not very good at drinking from cups (although this may have changed since 2005).

My piece of advice is: put in the graft and reap the rewards. It was a fantastic feeling when I finally broke 3 hours and worth all the effort put in to get it. Good luck. Believe

I'm in the same boat. As far as I can see, the only real solution is lots and lots of base miles before starting 16 weeks of marathon training. I haven't yet done that, hence stuck at 3.06

I ran 3:03.56 in Berlin last year and 3:02.11 @ FLM this year, Berlin is definitely a quicker course though. Hopeful to duck under 3 hrs in Chicago in Oct.

Thanks for the early response. Any potential sub 3hr runners attempting to do Berlin this September?
