Have added this mto my favourites to monitor as a point of interest. Ran 3:08 at Edinburgh this year, would love to go sub 3, but not sure I can manage that.
Next marathon is FLM 09 so will keep training as I am and then get a plan for sub 3 and see how it goes

Another one to add it as a favourite - I find it very interesting reading different training approaches etc. The (hilly) races and the quicker/longer runs I've done would seem to indicate sub 3h is attainable - will see after this autumns 2 hilly marathons, before, hopefully doing FLM'09 - my 1st "flat" race!

Another one to add to it as a favourite. I don't think I'm quite there yet in terms of speed- I'm hoping to be sub 3:15 and expect to be nearer to 3:00 than 3:15 if all goes to plan in September for Mablethorpe marathon.

I'm finding that training's going well and though I'm upping the mileage, I'm still getting quicker. I think it's thanks to the mix of training (usually 1 tempo run, 1 fartlek, 1 long run and 2-3 steady pacd 7 mile runs a week) and also giving myself enough time to rest.
Knowing when to rest is just as important as know when to run and having a training plan.

Looking for sub 3 at Amsterdam and feeling in good form at the moment (although hoping it cools down a bit soon in order to get in some decent long runs).

I'm hoping for a bash at Frankfurt in October. Having failed at sub-3 a couple of times after 16 weeks training I'm interested to see how I get on with about 2 months of traithlon training (with 20-25mpw running in there) followed by 11 weeks marathon training.
The runs that I am doing feel great - I'm stronger (all over) than ever before thanks to the tri training and regular (2-3 times per week) upper body weights sessions, and feel light footed abd quick on my runs. Pace for HR is good. BUT... I am sorely missing endurance base!! I will try and stick some big mileage weeks into the mix for 8 weeks before tapering, and see how it goes! It will be a bit of an experiment as clearly 11 weeks isn't enough training for a marathon, but who knows what the triathlon training has done for me?
Watch this space.
As I ramp up the running in a cople of weeks I'll be a regular on here to share experiences. Good luck everyone!

Apjar - Did Amsterdam in 2004 and it turned out to be my worst marathon. Felt stomach pains the morning of the race but went ahead anyway. Resulting in my most embarrassing experience running when I had to do 2 number 2s at 19 miles on the course in front of hundreds of people. Totally wasted after that and ran/walked for the rest of the way. Not a nice memory. Lesson Learnt - Be really careful what you eat the night before. The more simple it is, the better.

Another vote here for specifity of training. Managed eight 20+ milers during marathon training earlier this year and they really paid off in endurance terms at Edinburgh. Alternative weeks were done as fast finish long runs (four miles building up to 10). Another confidence builder were weekly PMP runs (10 building up to 18miles) at the expense of intervals. If you can hold your target pace (or perhaps a bit quicker) in these sessions you should get the belief to do it on the day. Good luck with your training
