Unbelievably I'm benched again. Had last week off as my back went into spasm on Thursday 12th (bending down to pick some grapes up of all things) and although I managed a mile on the Friday and a quarter marathon on the Saturday the travel home from Florida finished it off again. Ran an easy four miles yesterday and although a bit stiff again this morning it wasn't too bad so set off for an easy six. Back felt ok but within the first couple of miles my left adductor started niggling - as it had at London last year. I decided that as I'd run eighteen miles with it like that I'd be ok to finish the run and would probably take tomorrow off but at 5.6 miles (precisely!) it went bang. Couldn't run another step and walking was painful and difficult. I can only assume that my gait had changed because of my back issues (strangely my shoulder on the same side has been niggly but as it's the one with replacement ligaments I'd put it down to the weather). After some magic cream and ibuprofen I can walk ok as long as I keep my stride short and stay slow. Will be interesting to see if I get the bruising that I did after London. Unfortunately my amazing physio has just gone on maternity leave so I'm going to have to see someone new. Really hoping it doesn't keep me out of action for more than a few days as I hate losing all my base and having to build again and find it much harder when the weather's bad. Having a day out with my friend J tomorrow (the one with breast cancer) which should give me a bit of perspective.

Hello folks. First time dropping into the Sub 3 thread. Feels a little fraudulent with a PB currently waayyy past 3 hrs, but i've just written a blog about my big ambitious goal for the marathon next year. You can read it here if you'd like: fetcheveryone.com/blog-share.php?id=473840 I'll be spending a lot more time here and hopefully have more to contribute as my training picks up! |

@ptr_runner. Sub 3 is a very very lofty goal for a 3:45 marathoner. And with 55km/week it's not like you were totally untrained, even though long runs and long runs at MP were missing. I think you should go step by step. First sub 3:30, which is a respectable time. A few long runs and some training at MP may get you there. Then sub 3:15; which may prove much more difficult than you seem to think. |

Hey Charlesvdw. Thanks for your comments. I am acutely aware of how difficult it could be. Realistically, my current 3:44 PB was on a bad day, had everything gone well I should have been 5 or as much as 10 minutes quicker. There's a couple of points i'd like to highlight. Despite having now done 11 marathons, Munich '23 is only the first one i'd say I really trained for, and even then the block was missing some key elements. When it comes to running, i'm absolutely not shy of hard work and am never really lacking motivation. So yes, I agree. I should go step by step, which is why my goal race is 12 months away. I have the race in may that should see me under 3:30 without too much bother, and then i'll have another 5 months to seek further improvement. But hey, that's why i'm in this thread, because I need challenging, and hopefully I can find resource in those who are fitter and faster than I! |

Welcome ptr. Nothing wrong with having ambitious targets. Do you have the time to increase your mileage? We all get there in different ways but for me more miles was the main element of reducing my marathon time.

Ptr. I started out with 3:42 then 3:19 3:08 3:03 and a long time until 2:59 with I think five sub 3:03 times. Increased miles and focussed training will make a big improvement but the end goal might take some time. Best of luck. |

Going back a few pages, congrats Bowman on the PB. Of all weather conditions, wind is the one I hate the most, you can do some things with heat/cold/rain, but little you can do in the wind, apart from find a good group to run with.
