Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Everything I’ve read says shorter, sharper bursts. Almost a HIIT-type approach really. I’m not sure how that fits in with marathon training, surely it can’t?!

And then weights, of course.

Somehow when you’ve been conditioned to run long and often in marathon training it might just all be a new trick too far for the old dog!!

I've read that older athletes need to consider the risk of muscle loss. I've been intending to do a bit of strength work but somehow it hasn't started yet :-)

A good excuse for a few more steaks too.

I'll be sticking to the same basic plan though for now.

I'm also finding it harder this year to motivate myself into a new block of training for an autumn (New York) marathon. However, a rare appearance at track last week and 20 mile LSR yesterday has seemingly rekindled something so the hope is that the mojo is sustained.

I'd like to do fewer miles but I'm finding that as I age I seem to benefit from more, not less. training to keep the body in good condition. Time was when I could lock into target pace after a minute or two but now a slipping clutch needs 3-5 miles before I'm feeling loosened up to pushing on.

And yes, strength and conditioning is vital. Been absent from the gym for a good few weeks so need to get back into the routine of wobbly-legged runs after leg day :)

I started going to the gym once a week when I turned fifty to try to compensate for age related muscle loss. Not sure it's working! It's probably not enough but it's better than nothing. No way could I do a HIIT style running program - I'd break! As I was nearly fifty when I first went sub 3 and that was off the back of lots of easy miles I'm not ready to give them up if the body will allow me to do them. A LSR and a MLR are the basis of my marathon training.

Yes, turning fifty has definitely had a detrimental effect on recovery times, and that's with heavy rotation between the fancy plated, lightweight and cushioned shoes. I've been looking into starting pilates, yoga or something else to keep the calves and hamstrings from seizing up..

Feel to be going ok at 54 here, definitely a bit of a slowdown but only gradual. So far!

No marathon booked yet, I’ll see how august goes. Currently on holiday with the kids so just need to avoid catching any bugs and trying not to over do it at the buffet!

Ahhh the joys of a holiday with the kids. I’m back home with a stinking cold. Same happened last year and ruined London but I’m hoping this one isn’t quite as nasty. Bloody kids, the things we do for them 😁

I've added in more strength work over last couple of years, and also some more speed work, and I think it has helped. 18weeks pre marathon ave weekly distance was 60m p/w for Manchester 2016 and finished in 2:42. 18weeks pre last years Berlin Marathon was 45m p/w and finished in 2:40. Dont know if it was speedwork or S&C, or a bit of both.

Couple of quiet weeks on here - how’s everyone doing?

I’m just building myself up for the 4 key weeks training before half marathon and general tapering take over. Massively uncertain on target pace - which only adds to preparation stress for this half marathon! :)
