Cut and pasted from RW:
Short version - it became obvious in the third mile that today wasn't going to be my day, I was on pace but it was feeling far too much like hard work. Things went from bad to worse when I started having GI issues again - but this time from about mile 8. I had to give in and dive into a portaloo at 11.5 miles which helped though obviously cost me a bit of time and a couple of places, though I think I caught the guys who had gone past later on. I knew that a PB wasn't happening either but determined that I'd go for goal C though for a while I wasn't convinced that I was going to make it however I managed to negative split (I think) and come in at 2.56.49, my second fastest marathon so I should be ok with it really though I'm not especially happy. Good enough for second on the day but would never have challenged for the win even if on PB form as convincingly beaten by a not much younger but consistently faster lady who runs for Rotherham. I am very pleased for P however who smashed his first even marathon to secure his GFA (as long as they don't change it) with a comfortable looking 3.17.17. I am available for marathon mentoring for cake:-)
I knew I had the endurance but wasn't sure if the speed was there having missed those five weeks at the beginning of the year and it looks as though I was right. Nothing I would have done differently though I need to work out what's going on with my stomach (it isn't just an issue when racing) and what I can do to stop it.

Well done LMH, that is a hell of a time for someone having those kind of issues from a relatively early stage. Top mentoring, he clearly listened to your words of wisdom. What did you think of the event?

That’s stills an impressive run LMH, even more-so given you had issues to battle with!

Uyuni - I thought it was well organised. A bit of a lack of toilets at the College and the queue for them at the start was unbelievable but plenty of portaloos round the course, good water stations (though a total waste having 330ml bottles) no goody bag which is unusual, quick to do the presentations (we had to wait a while for third lady) and if I didn't love London I'd go back but then I'm happy to run round rough, dirty roads on my own for mile after mile:-) To be fair there was what I consider to be good support round the course given the size of the event and where it is.
Cheers Fergus. I was pleased that I had the mental strength to go for what was basically my C goal (another sub 3) and exceed it. I don't like to use excuses though.

So you had stomach issues for almost 4 miles, stopped to use a toilet and still ran comfortably under 3 hours, sounds like another very strong marathon performance LMH.
Congrats on the 2nd place finish as well

When you put it like that I feel a little better:-) Truth is though I knew from three miles that it just wasn't in the legs, the stomach issues were just another annoying factor.

I would bite my right arm off for a similar disapointment in a week's time !
That said I know its all relative when we have different abilities and aims and I know from experience when I have finished deflated only to find a very happy family as I have run a time that they can only imagine !
Well done LMH on a great time despite it not going so well

Fancy being able to pull out such a great performance with all those issues LMH. Well done!! Off compromised training too - surely another PB will be coming this Autumn...

Sorry it wasn’t your dad H but shows the mental strength you have to keep pushing when most, including me, would give up.
The next attempt is gonna be a big pb by the sounds of it
