Congrats LMH that’s a stonking performance off compromised training.
Funny things marathons, if you hit the A goal then you just think the A goal was too easy...anything below that there are always ifs and buts. It’s actually not such a long way off your PB, especially considering the circumstances. I see you were also too modest to mention the “not much younger” runner is in a lower age cat so more congratulations for the age cat win too!

Congrats LMH! Sounds like a great run under the circumstances. Great effort dip under sub 3 with a dodgy tummy

57.5 Degrees of Pain
Well done LMH, a time most of us would be overjoyed with!
I couldn't even manage an age group 1st at parkrun. Happy enough with 18.47 on a slightly long course and overall 2nd, but was way behind a fellow old man!
Had not run in 4 days with a bit of a chest infection, but seem to be on the mend now. Looking forward to gentle miles in nice weather this week, when I can. Rare week when I need to do some travelling which will throw me off my usual running commute.

Thanks guys.
jda - you are so right but then I guess if we didn't always want to get better/do the best we can we wouldn't have as much success in hauling ourselves out of the door and getting the training in.
I'm looking forward to starting my autumn campaign - I much prefer doing the miles when everyone else is complaining that it's too hot:-) Hopefully it won't be as compromised as this one was.
Sorry to hear that you've been ill 57.5 - good that you're feeling better now.
Practise that positive self talk Baz!

With a week to go, I've started thinking again about my target time. Since my training this year has been primarily based on volume, I've had a look at the times that previous volumes have converted into. My total 16 week pre-race mileage has converted as follows:
922 ? 872 02:56:11 780 02:57:47 662 03:11:42 648 02:59:33 636 02:59:28 323 03:24:17 295 03:22:41
So it's looking good for a pb, but actually it's not that much more volume than the previous attempts the gap to 2:49 might be too large, especially given it’s likely to be on the warm side. However, after some thought, I’m still planning to take that risk, and have a go at 2:49 pace accepting that if it goes wrong I might not make a pb. Though that plan may change later this week!

Thats my approach too Paul. I wouldn't be happy getting a 2.52 knowing there was a shot at getting under 2.50.
Taper must be working well, knees hurt today, hip was sore yesterday and legs generally felt like jelly.
Also looks like I'm going to have a last minute trip to Germany from Thursday to Saturday which hopefully won't upset things too much.

Gutted for P as VLM have just changed his GFA time! A GFA also no longer guarantees a place.
Sounds like me in the taper Chris.

Similar position here to you paul0 and Chris, I've gone sub-3 (just) and my training has been better than any of my previous marathons. I'm conscious that I might have a sub 2:50 in me but at the same time I think I could pretty much guarantee myself a 2:54 or something if I was conservative (which would be a 5 minute PB).
This is one of the reasons I'm probably going to run completely to effort (HR), I have a plan that should produce reasonably flat splits but adjusting on how my HR is going. However that plan could be affected by anything (including the heat) - I took a double espresso sis gel (150mg caffeine) before my run on Saturday to test it out and although the run wasn't any harder my HR was 10 beats higher than I'd have expected it for the paces I was getting. So I might end up taking a gel that is half the caffeine (at around 15-18 miles).
