A cap can help a lot jomo - it will hold a bit more water and keep you cooler for longer than just tipping it over your head.
jda - I consistently broke when I ran more than about 30 miles a week (despite custom orthotics for a leg length discrepancy and quite severe over pronation on both sides) which culminated in chronic inflammation in both hamstrings requiring three months rest before I could even begin to address the issues. I had running rehab with a physio who was a biomechanics specialist, this didn't require many sessions with her as most of it involved her giving me exercises to do for six weeks or so. At the end I still needed the orthotics to correct the leg length but was neutral on the left and supinated slightly on the right and can now absorb much more mileage despite my dodgy knees etc.

I wouldn't be overly worried about the weather. I ran the Edinburgh (Ambre Solaire) Marathon in 2009/2010 when it was mid 20s and at the time those were 2 of my fastest marathons. You just need to run to the conditions and ensure you keep hydrated and cool

Any recommendations on an appropriate running cap appreciated. Anyone used the 2XU Ice X?

Any thing white and mesh that fits will do jomo - my husband has a 2XU one and rates it. Stops the sweat running into his eyes too.

But don't apply any suncream above the eyes in case it does run. Stings like f##k!

Ah man I knew I should have run Manchester! Fortunately I don't suffer with heat particularly
3 x 1 mile efforts today, mind and body weren't in it but managed to scrape out a 5.22, 5.29 and 5.25. A little off last years 5.17's but it'll do.

Thanks to this thread I had a post work panic trip to decathlon - Running cap and gel belt purchased, probably end up buried deep in my running draw with various other bags/belts/gloves/hats I never wear!
Thanks to Paul0 I'm also panicking about my choice of footwear. I'm definitely not wearing my Salmons of Hoker Tracers, but it's a toss of the coin between my tempo boost and the Boost Supernova glides (which will offer a little more cushioning) - 10 days to go!

Panic buy cap turned out to be size small - 7 year old daughter likes it and is running laps of the living room - taper madness really setting in here

LOL Brunski. Store yourself away in cotton wool NOW.
I just have a comfortable old baseball cap which has done service at one London, two Bostons and two Comrades among a few other sunny races. It is cotton which actually works to hold moisture and allow some cooling. First time I raced a marathon in it was the first time I'd run in it (against the 'rules' I know!). But being a baldy who has lived in some hot places I'm used to the cap in general.
I was at the 2009 Edinburgh heatfest Bazoaxe. I got my first sub-3 but it was a struggle. And I passed a fair few in the last mile or two who were walking which had to be heat related. One guy collapsed just behind me too. So it does not help. Boston can often be tough with a fairly cool air temp but relentless sun wearing you down.
