Gel belt for me too. That way I’ll be sure to get the gels that I know my stomach can handle! northernrunner.com |

I stick mine in the top of my compression shorts but have also used a gel belt in the past before I became a compression addict. Looks like VLM is going to be a warm one. That’s going to be great for some, for those concerned I’d recommend wearing a cap and soaking it with water as often as poss. Makes a massive difference. |

LMH, yes I'd certainly be interested in any and all expert advice. There can't be a huge amount wrong but I'm certainly not perfectly symmetrical! Brunski, bear in mind it's the exact same race with the exact same plan and threshold sessions etc for three years, even the exact same tune-up half marathon for the last two of them. So the improvements, though modest, are clearly quantifiable. I didn't quite get within a minute either Did a very gentle 5k plod today. Not for the exercise really, just wanted a bit of fresh air. Still knackered and was hardly moving. I'll be sure to hold back from anything hard enough to cause harm. |

57.5 Degrees of Pain
I put a gel in each pocket if there is nothing on the course. One for 30km, one in reserve. If you are an experienced runner and train without guzzling carbs on every long run then I think gels are of more psychological benefit than physiological.

Bring on the warm weather. If I come 450 miles south I feel cheated if it isn't a lot more balmy than home! But of course a nice, dry, overcast 14° day would be most welcome. |

i learnt a trick off the web somewhere, and fix a bag to the outside of the waistband of my shorts with a couple of safety pins. Flipping it over the top and inside, it sits there snugly and undetectable while running and I can pull it out and access the contents (eg jelly babies) very easily.

I will take about 5 gels for the marathon and manage to get by with a mixture of carrying a few in my hand and stuffing the others inside sweatbands I wear on both wrists. Probably not optimal, but works for me. 57.5 - it may be that gels are mainly psychological, but I do not that when I've used them in races (early and steadily) that's coincided with some of my best results even though I don't normally train with much/any food or water. Re: the weather for London, I'm hoping it doesn't get too warm, the forecast already looking hotter than I'd like. |

Wow yes I just had a look at London forecast and I would be worried if I was doing it. Even last weekend I was pouring water on my head (no cap as it wasn't sunny this year). City centre, lots of concrete plus sun, temps approaching 20C and a 10am start....ouch.

I carry gels/inhaler in my pockets (twin trail shorts - highly recommended). Only usually take two gels in a marathon though I carry them in case as I'm a bit sensitive as to what I can take. Forecast for this Sunday was 18C but is deteriorating the closer we get - no point in worrying about the 22nd just yet. |

I have not yet given up hope that our grim weather will continue a bit longer than currently forecast but I am nervously checking it every day and not exciting by what I see. I ran Stockholm a few years ago when it was about 20 degrees with a noon start - I found it really tough going with the sun beating down relentlessly on my pasty, bald head. A cap would have definitely helped (a little). |
