I don’t think it’s a surprise that you should come out of that HM block a little jaded Mark. It was a step-up / -out performance for you and while I’m sure it’s given you a massive confidence boost it will take a bit of getting over. Sounds like you’re there now and I love the way you are talking! When I 1st went under 19 my HM was in the 87 -> 88 region so get race day right and I’m sure that you can smash the barrier. My sub19 attempt is next Sunday. I’ve been on a WW plan for the last 8 weeks, since I came back from my cycling trip and was able to focus properly* on some running again. I think 5k takes a bit of practice and so I was pleased to run 18:42 at parkrun a couple of weeks ago. I think that means I should be targeting something a bit quicker. My arthritic pb is 18:39 and so there’s something to target there. Fingers crossed for some decent weather. The WW plan never thought to include a taper / pre-race week. Whoops! (*as properly as 25 mpw can be) |

GReat stuff WW, back in strong form. I was doing OK until I've had an enforced probably 2 week limited running availability due to work stuff. Annoying. Nowhere near sub 19, but think I was dipping into mid 19s, though untested. XC at the weekend has given my left ankle and my right achilles some 48 hour grief though. Maybe it's good I can't get out to run! |

@Mark J 🇳🇿 I don't think old geezers like us should do VO2-max sessions. The risk of injury is way too high. One of my pet peeves is that people overestimate the need for speed/VO2max sessions when targeting a 5K. After all it's 99% aerobic event. |

I am M50 so I'm still somewhat young-ish, but you are in the next age bracket. Joking aside, don't you agree with me about the VO2max sessions ? |

@Charlesvdw given I'm only really a couple of years in to "serious" running, I'm just doing what the plans and my coach tell me to do ![]() |

I'm 52 and the main thing that stimulates better race results for me is invariably vo2max sessions. I plateau unless I get into a cycle of doing them. Which is one of the reasons in stuck on a plateau at the moment! |

The threshold plan I took on mid-year definitely benefitted me overall and that was all about the VO2 stuff.
