Big G-Hope things are better than they sound.
Legs were feeling tired so I pulled my run a bit shorter today, did 11.5,still meant I did over 50 again this week.Did a mile or so with OH so pace was a little over the place.
Tried the new gel,no stomach discomfort but a little hard to open, will be more forceful next time, also planning next use on a faster run to see how it is then.

Ian - another good week for you.

Hope those gels become easier to open with practice. Otherwise could be a problem mid race with sweaty hands.

Ian : What about a gel pouch? You can empty say two or even three gels into pouch and just use as and when needed?

WP-I've never heard of that, don't think I'd like it.I like the idea of having a full gel when I think it's due.
Shades-Yes I think I just need to rip downwards.Got it open eventually, just took work.50g of carbs in each 1 so hoping it works.
Nearly bought my flight to SA for next year, just hesitated as still a little unsure where to go first, think I'll be booking it soon though.

Something like this.I actually use it for my electrolite drink on long runs as i don't need a lot to drink.

Ian - Another good week. What gels are these? I’ve gone back to my old SIS/Maurten gel setup as the new Huma electrolyte ones weren’t agreeing with me. Have added some salt tablets though.

Big G - Fingers crossed for your dad

22 mile long run for me. Was feels like 27 so took it easy but HR was still higher than I’d like. Unpleasant for the last few miles but a good time on feet and niggles seem ok.

Rcouture - how are you getting on with the salt tablets?

Well done on yet another good long run.

5 miles today, nice fresh morning. Sore quads, think I overdid the squats yesterday.

Rcouture-These are called Styrkr, similar taste to Maurten but maybe a little less thick.
Decided to take today off,my achilles has been aching a little recently but this morning feels sorer than usual, hopefully a rest day will settle it down again.

Ian - I just saw those Styrkr gels offered in a RW newsletter. Not cheap, but with 50g of carbs I would expect them to be dearer.

Hope the days rest sorts the achilles.

Great long run Rcouture. Looks you’re doing great as still quite far out from Berlin. How many long runs are you hoping to get in? Good news on the niggles, too.

Not sure what to say about Dad really. I sat with him, or at least in the house, for most of the day. He’s not really aware of much at all. Carers and everyone all doing great to keep him comfortable. But even between Thursday when I last saw him, and yesterday, he’s gone downhill even more. Hasn’t eaten anything for a long time, and hardly drinking either. I did manage to sort out a care agency to sit with him over night last night, as his partner is very worried. He is very, very frail, but it’s hard to say how things are going to play out. Everyone is great but everyone also acknowledges there isn’t much positive to say.

Anyway, 8.5 miles today. Unlike Friday’s run, it was a bit of a struggle today, but got it done.

About This Thread

Maintained by Shades
Back in December 2005 I started a thread on Runner's World offering a marathon training plan on 3 runs a week. I had my own running club at the time (Womens Running Network) and I had successfully trialled the training plan when I took a group of girls to Dublin to run their first marathon.

Over the years the thread has evolved into a chat thread, with a bit of training advice, race reports, for predominantly marathon runners.
