I know I’ve talked about this before, but I find it odd that I can see I am getting fitter with my cycling. HR, power stats, etc, all steadily improving over the weeks/months. But for whatever reason this does not translate over to my running. The 7 miler I did to HR yesterday took me 1hr16 whilst at my fittest at running, at a lower HR, it took me 1hr. So, I was basically 2min/mile slower yesterday, having to walk slopes to keep my HR down, which I wasn’t having to do at my fittest. The stats don’t lie though but they do highlight where I am and show I’ve a long, long, long way to go, but on the other hand I’m pleased just to be out there again!

Ian - we had that weather yesterday, torrential rain. We needed the rain though. Which Preston race is that, the 20 miler? Big G - frustrating but just proof that training should whenever possible be sports specific. But cycling is not weight bearing, that's why the TdeF cyclists can race a 3 week event and runners can't...well they can but not to the same elite standard. But you're back training and you know what you have to do to get back to that level of fitness again and you can do it. |

Yeah, training definitely sport specific but I find the drop off in running fitness for me quite staggering really. It basically feels like starting again, from scratch! And I’ve been active in other areas, been really good with strength/stretching, but it’s still back to square 1 with the running. If I’d been doing nothing at all that would be one thing, but I’ve been doing what I can outside of running, I think.

Big G - you know nothing replaces base training for running, but once you can build that mileage up you'll be rewarded quickly with the results. And your strength/stretch stuff will contribute to future injury protection too.

Shades-No it's a 10 mile,I've done it a couple of times, actually was my first post covid race when we got some races in Aug 2020. We have a half planned 5 weeks out from HCA and there's a 20 the week after I might do. Big G-It might come back quicker though as you'll have retained some aerobic fitness |

@Big_G when this has happened to me previously I've paddled in the doldrums for a while then quite suddenly come into form. I'm now a runner who cycles when the weather permits, which isn't very often at the moment, and it's remarkable how little my fitness from running transfers to cycling.

Just been writing up my Antwerp training when I got 3:10,as that's what I'll need minimum at HCA for GFA. I averaged 47.8mpw,after 3 weeks I am 7mpw up on the same stage so a good start. I only had 2 60m weeks but I was really consistent so that's good to see.I am hoping to have a few weeks higher than that though this time. |

Ian - that is a good start especially when comparing your current training to your Antwerp training.

Shades-I thought that was a good build to compare it to,think I got 3:10:02 so gives me a good idea how I am doing compared to then, couple of races lined up similar to then so should have a decent idea come race day.

Ian - all bodes well. Where are you weight wise, where you want to be for racing? Big G - just seen this posted on FB by a runner I know who says this is an alternative to a medical certificate for a race in France. I haven't checked it out but maybe worth a look pps.athle.fr |
