Are you any nearer to a decision, G?

I'm picking up a pair of sit-on kayaks next week. Having run past Starcross YC yesterday, and pretty much the whole shoreline of the Exe Estuary, with lots of time to contemplate how to spend planned leisure time in the next decade, I am now trying to work out whether my budget will also stretch to a Mk4 Wayfarer!

No, it might be a year before I buy Synge (or next Spring in time for next summer and start ramping up the students!). I always take ages to make purchase decisions. I've got all my RYA tickets to do first. Level 2 this month, then see what I'm advised after that. I'm lucky there's a school 20 mins down road from me. :-) G

I think I want something that can carry a couple of "passengers" but that could also be sailed solo. I am moving away from the idea of a Wayfarer, as single-handed recovery up a slipway is a real challenge. It's a heavy boat.

Looking at Wanderers now. Hartley Boats took over building them about ten years ago and they made a couple of serious improvements to the design, including shifting buoyancy around to make it much easier to right.

Yes, it is, but it will still take three adults. And it’s a lot lighter than the Wayfarer.

The RS Quest seems to be a very popular training boat. It looks good.

I don’t think there are many secondhand ones around just yet, though, so keep your eye on Apollo Duck if you’re after one.

Couple of Wanderers at our club. Easily sailed single-handed and plenty room for 2 adults. Also benefits from a relatively generous (own opinion) Portsmouth Yardstick handicap so makes racing more fun. Because winning is fun, right?! ;)

Srsly, from what I’ve seen, it’s a really nice boat. If I didn’t already own my Wayfarer I’d probably buy a Wanderer for the same job. Our friend Bill loves his.

Thanks, Angus. Isn’t it great when you get this kind of affirmation for a planned purchase! 😀

Deposit paid on a secondhand Wanderer today! Eek!

Arrrr, yo ho ho ho, ahoy there me hearties heart etc.

Pirate speech optional.

Might just be me and Angus Clydesdale, but anyone else into sailing? I'm just getting back to dinghy sailing and loving it. I got canoe during lockdown cos a mate at work cajoled me into it. Then paddleboards because of the good people on the Kayaking and Canoeing thread. But when it's windy, paddling is hard. Sailing is so much better.

So... anyone? :-) G
