Hmm, good question now you mention it. I think actually it was G quoting what Pog had told him.

I thought I'd read that Thomas said that.

escapecollective.com

Pogacar said he was completely destroyed after the Tour.

cyclinguptodate.com

I reckon if he'd gone and everyone worked for him only for him to crack later, that would definitely annoy teammates that had worked for him in two races.

Yeah, easy as an armchair critic to say what he should have done!

Just been catching up on the interviews after yesterday’s race. Quite amusing to hear MvdP and Evenepoel saying they thought Pogacar had made a huge error (“I thought he was throwing away a world champion jersey”, “it’s not the smartest move, but apparently for him it is”, “if you think in normal ways, you would think it’s a suicidal move”). And then funny to hear Pogacar say “No, of course it was not planned, it was stupid”, “anyone who would plan this, his IQ would not be very high”. What a race though.

Current state of the sport is that if you get a decent gap in a one day race then you have a decent chance of staying away. The priority in saving your legs/not doing work for more dangerous riders gives you an excellent opportunity when you get that 45+ seconds

I thought immediately that the peloton would collaborate and bring him back but they didn't and even Belgium took a while to get organised. As soon as attacks started behind, it didn't look good as no one was going to get across solo. I do wonder whether Belgium could have ridden slower and lasted for longer (Inrng suggests them trying to pull him back quickly dissuaded others from helping and blew them up) and try to catch Pogacar after he'd stewed for a bit. Pogacar was so superior yesterday that it's obvious a quick catch by a small group would have ended up with the same result. The only person in the race that might have been able to go with that on paper was Evenepoel and he was too far back (don't think he had the legs yesterday anyway). MVDP would have been asking for trouble trying to go with Pogacar and did the right thing.

Roglic said that Pogacar just went on instinct and Patrick Broe of Lanterne Rouge said that the attack was an example of how well Pogacar reads a race as he went just as Slovenia were running out of riders to control (only Roglic left) and attacks were starting to fly.

Got to give Tratnik credit yesterday as well as Pogacar was clearly stronger than everyone else but Tratnik essentially finished off the Belgian team so by the time he finished there wasn't anyone really helping to pull things back.

Next year is apparently going to favour climbers even more so if Pogacar arrives on this form, it's hard to see past him next year as well.

Merckx says Pogacar is the GOAT.

I still think Vingegaard might be the best GT rider when it's all said and done but no one has the range of Pogacar across the different races on the calendar. He would be a contender at every single Monument.

The only moment where he really looked concerned was when he missed the feed and it took a while for him to get a car upto him. It maybe suggests how big a part current nutrition strategies play and how on a knife edge it may be.

It may be the one question over next year. Rwanda is supposed to have 1000m more climbing than Zurich, so one for the goats, but I also wonder if much warmer. Pog has previously shown a slight weakness in hot conditions (specifically related to the difficulty absorbing nutrition when it is very hot I understand), so may be the one glimmer for others.
