That would be a QS failing anyway rather than Evenepoel and that's a point as the pressure has actually been turned on QS to improve rather than Evenepoel recently.

Don't really need to add much comment here given I've posted multiple comments along these lines previously. Vuelta a España leader Sepp Kuss reluctant to be sole team contender cyclingnews.com |

Maybe it's me watching F1 too much, but I still struggle with the idea that the three of them are on some sort of meritorious trip where each of them is happy for one of them to win, whilst simultaneously all of them want to win, especially with the generalised concept that GTs are won by riders who have a good domestique team to support them in the mountains. But I'm looking forward to watching it play out nonetheless! I can't quite see a "Hamilton vs Rosberg" crash between the three team leaders, but I do expect there to be at least one period during the week where the bonhomie between the three leading riders in TJV comes under a little strain out on the road. |

Do the sponsors have any input into what outcome they may prefer?! IE, would Cervalo quite like seeing an American win on their bike, to hopefully get more Americans on their bikes?

I'd hope mid-race they don't have an influence, but I did read a suggestion elsewhere that the agents for the team "stars" would be unlikely to be remaining silent whilst their clients are being potentially upstaged by a lowly teammate. Not entirely implausible, but I've also not read any direct evidence of it either.

Just reading some comments on social media, news sites and YouTube videos etc, the American public (or certainly those interested in cycling) are very clearly behind Kuss. I know he says he wants to go under the radar etc, but the fact is there is a lot of hype around what he may or may not do. Before the start of the race I wanted Roglic to win, but I hope Kuss does it. Shouldn’t really be a GC today I don’t think. |

It's not really that controversial. Jumbo had to have considered the possibility of Kuss winning as they put him in the break with three teammates and he gained 3+ mins on all GC contenders. Comments before the race show that Kuss was at least in the consideration and circumstances meant that that they found a way to make it a reality. It's been forgotten but Roglic and Vingegaard gained 30 secs on Evenepoel on that stage and dropped all the other GC contenders. I imagine if QS had ridden harder to control the break, Evenepoel might have had more trouble and maybe that's part of why they couldn't control it If Kuss was a rider that was looking to trump Vingegaard and Roglic and moaning about his role (see Armstrong Vs Contador in 2009 where Contador was clearly stronger but team dynamics were in support of Armstrong), there might be tension, but he isn't so I think it's fine. Neither rider gains much reputation wise from winning this race (Roglic would get closer to record number of wins but the TDF is what he wants really). You can't attack your teammate in the leaders jersey so if Kuss has the legs for the rest of the race, I see no reason why he doesn't win. If Ayuso or Mas can somehow cause a crack, that's when things may change. Maybe UAE go for making the race hard on multiple days to see if someone has bad legs one day/ fatigue catches up with them. |

You can attack your teammate in the leaders jersey (and it's been done?) But be prepared to be in the bad books across the peleton and good luck getting your future teammates to work for you in future races....
