I'd imagine the life then, the circumstances after the civil war made the 'right to bear arms' more logical than it is now. I wonder how many American lives would have been saved if that hadn't been written, so when the relevance of the clause expired you didn't have powerful fanatics clinging to it indefinitely so that its untouchable. Unlike an unwritten constitution it doesn't evolve naturally and they made the bar to amend it high. An industry has sprung up interpreting its rules in the modern world, and what it covers and doesn't. And of course it was written to support the requirement of the raising of a “regulated militia” (presumably anticipating a British Military invasion to recover its lost colony). The right was attached to a specific purpose. “A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” |

James O'Brien on the pardon. I think Biden really didn't have much choice. It's a use it or lose it thing and if his son ended up with an unfair sentence then he'd have to live with that and the consequences. The question is really why they have the power. |

That's an interesting take. I guess Biden was very principled welcoming Trump and having a smooth transition of power with no silly games or drama. This is the side of Biden that is a father and soon to be ex-leader, and is pragmatic in a way I'm sure lots of people can relate to. |

Nice of Labour to do a knee jerk stop on the Natural History GCSE because "it was a Tory initiative". theguardian.com |
