And that "the little people can't be trusted and must be overseen by their betters" attitude is a significant part of the aristocracy and the Conservative party's raison d'être. I welcome any moves to dilute and weaken that. |

None of this counts as a big scandal, and arguably it is not a scandal anyway. But it is something that doesn’t look good, and that No 10 could live without. Yesterday Keir Starmer said he would carry on accepting gifts. Perhaps there might be a rethink. Freebies for politicians are never "free". The donors will expect their quid pro quo at some point. And that's why it should be banned. In all its forms. You get paid a lot of money. Pay for your own stuff. Most other people have to. Otherwise, you'll end up looking just like the Tories, with their selfishness and corruption, which is not a good look and was in part responsible for getting them booted out. |

Totally agree. And even if it's *only* football tickets, for the team you support, it's still not a good look.

Sorry, but Keir does look like a grubby little grifter on this. A rack full of suits, more pairs of specs than you could possibly need and a few dresses for the Mrs. Things he could easily afford himself. Of course there’s quid pro quo - the No 10 all access pass, and what else? It probably isn’t that bad, and hopefully he’ll rein it in from now, but I just hoped he’d be better. Give the right this sort of open goal and they’ll take it. Seen ‘Six suits Starmer’, ‘Free gear Keir’ doing the rounds, not to mention YT clips of him performatively moralising at PMQ’s on this sort of thing. It percolates out, will be used and has an impact. |

Couldn't have worded it better - not by a million miles to be honest. Absolutely spot on TRO.

EU has ruled that Ireland tax breaks which Apple enjoyed were illegal and Apple needs to pay Ireland £13bn in back taxes. It would cover just over 50% of the black hole. The reduction of the winter fuel benefit costs £1.5bn. There is an arguement to split up social media companies just like the US did to Standard Oil in 1911. |

Just been to the dentist. They’re opting out of the NHS and going private. The dentist said it was a business decision as they thought they would have to close within five years if they stayed in the NHS. Really? Bit premature if you ask me but again to be fair I don’t know the exact ins and outs of it all. Initially we were going to move dentists because we’re not happy with the decision. But after doing some ringing round and a bit of research there doesn’t appear to be a single dentist within a fifty mile radius of us that’s taking new NHS patients. Annoying that they have taken this decision just now that the Labour Party has got in. But this is the sort of privatisation that the Tories wanted and actively pursued by underfunding the NHS for years. We can afford the cost. But there will be a lot of people round here who can’t. Hope that Labour can get this shit sorted out quickly. |
