It's partly the world we live in; if the PM's wife was regularly out in the same outfits at "official" engagements, I'm pretty sure the press would be the first to complain about her "letting the country down" etc etc. And then if she was able to afford, say, a haute-couture dress from her own pocket for an official engagement, they would berate her (and him) for being wealthy and out of touch. And if she gets the budget for clothing to meet her "official" obligations from a private donor, it's cronyism. If the tabloids cared less about appearances etc, this issue wouldn't arise at all. |

Anyone read the Guardian's article on how the Labour right plotted (yes - properly planned) Corybn's downfall, didn't want him as PM as he wouldn't do the things they wanted doing (like what???). I mean we kind of already knew this, but it's quite explicit and sets out they really didn't want a Corbyn win in 2019. theguardian.com |

Without fact checking everything in the article, I note that it comes from a single source: The author, who has taken the extract/parts from her book which she is trying to sell. So, bear that in mind when you read it as if it were gospel. |

I think it would be reasonable for them to have a fairly generous allowance for clothing etc.

Definite whiff of Major’s ‘Back to Basics’ about this from Starmer. You, and your team need to be squeaky clean to go on these moral crusades - press will be merciless if not.

And if he's struggling to make ends meet, then he has to make some tough choices. Perhaps less avocado, cancel Netflix. Or perhaps he needs to decide whether he can put the heating on this winter. This is how it works right?! |

After 14 years of the most openly corrupt government of modern times, people are getting worked up about this? It's so tiny and inconsequential by comparison with e.g. the Michelle Mone scandal, or dozens of other snouts-in-the-trough incidents under the Tories. Just shows the power of the right wing press to set the agenda.
