Probably a good idea to make sentencing not political as it will probably work better outside of a 4/5 year election cycle rather than flip-flopping, but sentencing is one of those arguments that will go on forever as people do not have a common view of the blend of punishment / rehabilitation / removal / restriction that crimes should be met with. These values are fundamentally what politics is built on though - so it's really tricky.

You can make a heterosexual homosexual and vice versa (not comparing either to what he has done). In my working life I have seen people manipulate psych teams to get what they want by how they answer questions etc. If he “fails” the rehabilitation will a prison sentence follow or just further rehabilitation. I don’t underestimate the work a stretches probation service does my son works with ex offenders. Maybe I am more of a flog em person than I would like to admit. Why are you bringing sexuality into this? And in what world do you think conversion works? |

Thanks Dave A, I clearly hadn't been paying sufficient attention and was giving undue credence to the minimisation of the defence. Conniving and colluding in getting underage stuff is clearly inexcusable and not in any way accidental. |

I don't think you can remove sentencing from politics. At the end of the day, one of the most important things that politicians do is set the framework for law and order. But once the politicians have settled on a position, it's wrong to criticise the judiciary for implementing it either broadly or on a case by case basis. |

And on the “Labour are just the same as the tories” front I’d like to acknowledge that they aren’t quite the same and in some respects are clearly better, eg: theguardian.com |

I think it's more that he sees himself as a Victorian overseer in a 19th century cotton mill.
