Life in East Germany was so good that over 100,000 people tried to escape. Many were killed.

Yes, there is "Ostalgie" in East Germany for certain aspects of life under communism. People certainly had more opportunities to practice sport, for example, but many aspects were much, much worse; not least of which the fact that 1/30 East Germans worked in some way for the Stasi.

On Gaza, I suspect very few Americans care about it. Or certainly don’t care enough about it to materially influence a voting decision.

For the groups blaming Biden and Harris for the current conflict, have they forgotten about Trump moving the US embassy to Jerusalem? Not exactly the actions of a friend to Palestine.

It's not about Trump. They wanted the current administration to put more pressure on Israel. The current administration didn't, possibly because of the election. Note the recent red line they had expires after in a couple of days so after the election. Presumably any action they take now won't work unless Trump will continue with it. If they

I think one thing we know of Trump is that he doesn't want American troops in overseas conflicts. (It's his main sensible criticism of McCain). Trump won't care to get involved in Palestine because he won't want to set himself up to something he could be seen to fail at.

He'll be involved, it's just how he's involved. Even if it continues as it is now, the US will be supplying the weapons.

There's a wonderful episode in (I think) Deutschland 89 where the character of Walter Schweppenstette (who I think is in the HVA if memory serves) visits west Berlin and sees how life is so different to that in east Berlin and is somewhat overwhelmed by it all.

It reminded me of Goodbye Lenin of course too.

I am also reminded of the Brexiter, who at the time of the referendum campaign, tried to tell this very thread (or its precursor) that life in Northern Ireland was better before the good Friday agreement. A northern Ireland fetchie told them they were talking bollocks and they still wouldn't believe it.

Because it conflicted with their core belief of Brexit.

The types of people who have these sorts of beliefs are simply not serious.

There are still vast differences and inequalities from the old East Germany vs the old West Germany.

Though that definitely does not necessarily equate to people being worse off now than they were before, just that even after 35 years, the barriers are there in a different way.

Worse off in some areas does not necessarily mean worse off overall. Once again the good being rejected in favour of a mythical perfect.

I've only just heard this. It's actually nuts they let it get that far with those numbers. A lot of ignoring data seemed to have happened including around the economy and Biden's popularity.

Amazing how 'better off' is financial and ignores lack of freedom and mass surveillance.

Read 'Shut up legs' for a flavour
