Clearly we draw the line somewhere (until/ unless we eventually get universal basic income) and my comment about Ferraris and Bentleys is a line. I think it's the potential drawing of the line at every day activities which then feels like if you get benefits you can't do leisure or entertainment activities you have to pay for. It's quite possible the pensioners in Richmac's story are simply upset that they are getting extra money and don't need it. The reality is most pensioners don't need it isn't it? The issue Age UK and others seem to be raising is there are some that do (2.5 million according to their petition) that will not get it for various reasons. |

On reflection it’s apt money saved on axing the winter fuel allowance goes to the Ukraine war After all we lost free prescriptions under Gaitskell in order to fund the Korean War I want tax to go towards our NHS and providing universal benefits for all; not lining the pockets of arms manufacturers, buying weapons for foreign wars thousands of miles away |

Financial leaders and party insiders warn Starmer: we need less gloom, more optimism I do find myself agreeing with this. After the election there was a sense that things might get better from then on, but the relentless gloom-mongering is having a real dampener on feelings in the country. I know that you got left a bag of shit by the Tories, and you should say so at every opportunity. And realism is good after all the idiocy of the last few Tory leaders. But for God's sake temper it with some more upbeat stuff. |

Thing is though, they have already done positive stuff, sure JB can list it, but the media are screaming about a single issue. Part of me thinks it's the PR machine that's faulty. But yes I broadly agree a bit more feel good would be welcome. |

I agree. People need to be shown or given something to look forward to. A statement of intent. Just showering people with gloomy news is a big mistake. Even if it's no more than a fair assessment of the situation, you need to describe a vision of the future and give people something to hang on to, preferably with a sense of problems being addressed now.

Or even sunshine after the rain.... It doesn't need to be "political spin", the optimist in me says it might even be truth. |
